I see a few Stravassholes every weekend on the spruit, and then I see it everyday on the roads in my car- RSA society in general is the problem. Consideration towards other people is a scarce commodity...

That still doesn't make the woman's statement acceptable, nor does is make the DA councillors comments acceptable.

I agree that consideration is a rare thing in this country nowadays.

As for the councillor, as much as I believe that people in that position should be very careful of what they say and how they conduct themselves on social media and in public, I see his comments as childish and petty little jibes.

As for this woman, well something must have really upset her enough to go through the trouble of wanting to vent about it on social media.

I am embarrassed to sometimes be associated with cyclists, and that normally after I ride The Spruit .

Thanks to those inconsiderate twits that ventured in to our town and the Beaulieu reserve, we have also had those trails blocked for our regular usage over the years.

The Spruit will be closed off to bicycles in time to come, it will take a few more incidents, one pissed off and childish councillor and a few public meetings and before we can even say "Delta" we will have to look for another green belt to use.

Yup, some spruit riders really seem to be a special bunch.

Riding up there this morning and a bunch of rock stars came bombing down the BMX course that ends at the Virgin Active - humping and jumping, so amazing!  They careened through another family group, including a couple of kids, swerved round them and connected with my friend's handle bar, swerving between us and the other group.  When yelled at, they threw back a bunch of insults, laughed and carried on.  Quality people.  These pillocks give people like Truluck all the ammo they need

I don't see riders being banned in a public space for the minority s actions anymore than I see dog walkers being banned for the minority's actions.

There's a strong argument for restricted usage on many routes, and generally I agree. There should be restricted and multi trail usage with the appropriate signage and education. As the spruit and greenspaces become more popular, it simply has to be addressed. Not as a form of penalty but to mitigate conflict.

There are enough responsible people around to counter the stupidity of the minority who want to wave the big stick, based on the stupidity of the other minority.

And you know what, some people will make up or totally embellish a story just to have something to say or because they view another group as a nuisance.

For every twit there are two nice guys, it's honestly not such a bad place. I see a lot of mutual respect on the spruit and I ride or run there almost every work day. This DA guy on the other hand... He gave us plenty of uphill with the Delta Dash also. I reccon he can't ride a bike and is bitter about it.

Between this and your JUMA ranting thread, it seems like the Spruit really is your least favourite riding spot, but for some reason you have this masochistic streak that draws you to the Spruit so you can get infuriated by it and its users all over again... and let the whole hub know about it.

May I suggest some other places to ride?

If you insist on still torturing yourself with Spruit rides then may I give some friendly advice

That "BMX track" is in fact a set of dirt jumps built by dirt jumpers. And whilst anyone is welcome to use them, some common sense and caution should be exercised by both those jumping and anyone nearby.

  • First guideline... don't ride up a jump line. It's like running up a down escalator. Totally doable, but a waste of energy, and rather pointless. Likewise jumpers should be aware of what's on the line before they proceed down. Sometimes there may be another rider and they proceed anyway seeing there is a possibility they can avoid that rider (or in the hope that rider will see their intention to jump and adjust course accordingly).
  • Second... don't stand in the middle of the line. There are plenty of nice green grassy areas next to the trail to munch that energy bar/check that niggle on your bike/update your FB status.
  • Third... when there are children involved greater caution should be taken on all parts. Kids can wander off anywhere. And whilst I don't think any rider in their right mind would intentionally run over a child (so I would suggest riders slow when they can see children/horses/dogs on the trails)... I also suggest parents should also be aware of their children's whereabouts for the times a rider may not see them. ie...

  • Lastly... everyone relax. Be courteous. It goes a long way.

Well said and nicely explained .

Bottom line, some cyclists (and this is at no particular group) need to learn some manner and etiquette .

Some runners and doggy walkers need to do the same.

For now the Spruit is a communal ground and unless we as cyclists swallow bit of our pride and decide to show we can behave and respect others ,we will loose the permission to ride there.

Yes ,I know what some will say about our "right to ride" bottom line we are outnumbered and from my experience on the Spruit, most runners and walkers and dog folk have better manners than some of the cyclists I have experienced around the place.

This small group of cyclists who tend to think that The Spruit belongs to two wheels and two wheels only, they will be the ones who might cause those same to wheels to be prohibited in the future .

this war is getting better and better, now its taxis vs pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, but also cyclists vs pedestrians vs motorists. Free for all everyone, first to grab his pepper spray wins [nothing]

Rule #1: Don't be a dick.

That'll pretty much solve any problem.

Rule #2: When for some reason you have been a Dick, apologize and show remorse and be on your way.

These two kind of cover this whole argument.

People make mistakes, get heated, let off steam and say things they don't mean. On bikes, walking dogs etc. Live and let live.  Co-exist with your fellow human beings, dog walkers, dogs, mtbers, noobs, stravaholes etc. Fellow human beings on this planet.

Work out a way to live together where all your needs can be met.

And that is all you need to know folks.

Obey those two rules and we won't be having threads like:

Women promoting violence,

Cape Town has the worst riders.

Cyclists running red lights.

Etcetcetcetcetcetcetcetcetcetce.

Oh and zero bitching and whining.

Without threads like these I would actually have to spend my day working....
