Been riding my BFs old 26er on trails around KZN this holiday and I can promise you that there is a HUGE difference between this and a 29er, rolling ability of a 26er is much less. Going downhill on a rock garden on a 26er is an invitation for an endo. But just try catch me on my 29er!

try being more of a pilot of the bike vs being the passenger on the bike

29ers are generally faster and easier to ride than 26ers.

However my 26 FS nails them in tight technical single track. As for rock gardens get my weight back and bomb it

Seeing the amount of MTB 's on cars on my way to the coast this year confirmed that MTB is bigger than ever.

Agreed with the no of mtbs attached to the back of car's bring very high this year compared to previous December's.

Either there are more mountain bikers or some one had a moerse sale on bike racks and people can now afford to strap them to the bank of their cars and not shove then into the boot anymore.

Not all 26ers were/are created equally. ;)

Interesting thread this.

I got my first MTB back when one had to drive 30km to find a decent bike shop, I have since upgraded to a 29er (or downgraded depending on your perspective), but there is a definite increase in the amount of people on MTBs.

I think it is great for the sport in the country and promotes a more healthy lifestyle which is good.

One area which I feel has been negatively affected is the races. Nowadays you have a lot of casual riders in races, and due to lack of skills they tend to annoy the more seasoned riders (JUMA being a prime example).

I think the JUMA one is an interesting example (and by no means am I singling them out with this comment because I am sure it hasn't been the first and won't be the last) but, while you are 100% right in what you say about the unskilled people being an annoyance to those racing, the way it was punted made it sound like a casual ride around the city. I'm sure we can all remember the post race comments afterwards with people (myself included) pointing out that they said it was for everyone whether they were a professional or a weekend warrior, so, if you advertise something to the masses (which that certainly was) you have to word it very carefully.

Now, I am definitely no podium contender (to be honest, the podium have finished their beers and already gone home when I get in normally:p) but, I think a lot of people wanted to do it as a first time race entrant thinking they'd have a lekker ride and go to work on Monday to tell their colleagues how they did their first race, and a lot of people got a horrible shock.

I know this happened with a colleague of mine, he was so keen to ride but only realised too late that he hadn't entered and I got him together with somebody off of here selling an entry and he landed up 'riding' in excess of 6 hours and when we spoke more afterwards it turns out that most of the time he has slicks on his MTB and rides on the road around the Cradle.

Get some new friends...... MTB is the new Golf/ Corporate thing to do.

Some get swooped up by the "phase" and go buy a Makro special bike to get started, but get frustrated with their bike etc etc....

In short, MTB is huge, well at least in the land of milk and honey here in Western Cape...

..i see youbare reqruiting cyclists to the land of milk and honey. I like it.

My 2c

There is still lots of people interested in the sport, it will continue to grow(not at the same rate) and my thinking is

COSTS

SAFETY

A few years ago when people heard you cycled they were interested and they mostly said they would like to try it it sounds like fun , it's a great way to see the country side,

Lately when you speak to strangers they like" are you freakin mad, taxi, jackings"

NO THANKS THEY NOT MAD it's simply not worth it it's TOO dangerous

Times are getting tough and people in general don't have the money it takes to do a few races/stage races anymore and still buy bikes and spares, middle class is falling away. With entry fees like joberg2c/EPIC AND AND AND, MOST cyclists I know simply can't afford it, saying that these stage races normally sell out in minutes........so what do I know

As said above you see more and more bikes attached to cars than ever, cycling is a great sport to bad we can't play the way we want to due to our roads and the creatures preying on us SOFT TARGETS

I will put you in a race against my 11 year old on his 26'er down the Tokai trails and see if your 29 can keep up ;)
