Novice, bike setup mistakes

This last weekend I rode the 70km Lido fast one and towards the end of the ride where we caught the 40km bunch there were more than 5 people who we passed, who's seat height or handle bar position was so bad they actually battled to ride the bike. there was even 1 guy in the front of the 40 batch who looked like he was riding a BMX his seat was so low.

Its worrying that people give up the sport due to discomfort to quickly. Mostly due to bad bike Sizing or setup.

If you see a person riding who's setup is very obviously wrong and hampering there riding ability / riding pleasure.

Is it polite to offer some assistance in adjusting there bike to make it fit better?

I tried to help a guy out once. His saddle was so low that he could hardly pedal. His response was quite aggressive, asking me "what do you even know?" And that he "preferred it low".

Won't be offering help again.

My fiancée also complained about the saddle killing her.  So I stood back and behold, nose in the air.  Tuned it a bit, and she has a happy sitter now...

I tried to help someone who is really not a newbie anymore this past holiday. I discreetly advised him to lower the tyre pressure of the MTB on the first off road venture. The response: What do you know? I was going to reply that 6 years of MTB races and lots of falls because of tyres being too hard was enough experience but also decided that this person should maybe find out the hard way (pun intended). Worst of it all is, this guy knows that I will give sound advice on stuff like this.

Best advice I ever got, "never give advice unless it's asked for".

I trust you asked for advice on advice then?

or something like that..
