Got a noisy (In a ventilated semi sound isolating area) 6.5Kva gen "plumbed" into my house with a manual changeover switch in the box outside, all my globes in the house are LED so lighting is very light weight, fridge uses an inverter compressor so i assume its fairly light as well.

The only time i really hear the gennie rev up is when turning on the pool pump and geyser, but it still runs them fine if needed.

I'm searching for a different solution however to run some medical testing equipment, the kit my wife uses costs 10k a pop to have calibrated, thus a cheap MSW inverter probably wont cut it. I'm assuming that a Pure Sine Wave inverter will be "safe" as I don't believe the power we get from Eskom to be that clean anyway. Waiting for the calibration guys to get back to me though.

Definately need a UPS for that - should clean up the gen power enough to be compliant - and will avoid the small switch off time that happens with an inverter from time to time.

Disclaimer - I know some of the directors of this show - but some of their pricing is pretty good.

TRUST ME EVEN IF A GENERATOR DOESNT HAVE A VOLTAGE REGULATOR the power is cleaner than eishkom,(obviously i dont suggest you try it)

the days of our power being "clean" are looooong past

Mmmm, good point, Inverter for the "deep cycle" longevity filtered through a smallish UPS into the audiometer.

Patient reports etc can be sent through after a few hours anyway so the PC is not to serious, its just the idle time when she could be testing.

Thinking out loud...

Then one would not really need to spend the extra ZARs on a PSW inverter, a MSW would work fine as the power is then "filtered" (very loose term I'm sure) by the UPS.

She gave me a budget of around R5k to come up with something suitable, would have been easy with consumer grade electronics, but on the medical side I'm a little hesitant.

You can probably just attatch the UPS to the gen directly - no inverter needed - they are very good at filtering power.

Just a question of how much power needs to be delivered and for how long before a gen has to kick in.

Small UPS and inverter gen as backup? I am assuming this is at her work premisis and not at home.

Yup, at the practice, no generator there, the landlord's not to keen to put one in. Basically just need the power the Audiometer for 80 mins in total (3-4 x 20 minute tests) during each 'shed, she would turn it off when there are no patients.

The PC would be nice cause then she would have the option to fit H/As during this time as well, but to keep a PC running for any decent time i would need probably 2 deep cycle 105ah batteries.

You know I wish people would consider their neighbours before they put in generators. Our neighbours have a monster in their garden which is closer to our bedroom windows than their entire house. And it kicks in automatically sometimes at 4 in the morning. It drives me bonkers. We have a battery inverter ups thing that supplies enough power to run electronics and a few lights for something like 8 hours and we're installing a gas hob inside so we don't have to cook outside this winter. But really the generators in every household argument is concerning. This isn't farmland we're talking about this is suburbia where people live close together and I for one don't enjoy diesel fumes and the constant drone of a generator every time the power goes out.

That is the problem with generators. You will have to call Law Enforcement to get this problem sorted. Generator noise and pollution is not acceptable for use in suburbs, and anyone using a generated and making a loud noise in the suburb is very inconsiderate.

Stuff them, I will not buy a genny.  At least I have a gas stove.  Please remember to switch your mains off so that you don't get the spike when the power comes on.  We all know by now the time schedules.  Just switch it on 5 minutes after the scheduled on time.  Saves your electronics and a lot of hassles.

Will remeber this, but as for the time schedules, I never know

guys i know its expensive but surely by now the only conclusion can be generator time, its not going to get better, so you go gas stove, gas geyzer, 12v lights, battery packs over time add all that up time and effort you could have had generators loooong ago and it will be cheaper

BOYS ITS TIME ITS NOT GETTING BETTER GO BUY A PROPER GENERATOR

Told the missus that I'd much rather pay for the relocation fees & paperwork for moving <anywhere but here> than buying a generator. Not the lack of electricity that scares me that much. What happens when the water infrastructure falls over?!? Civil war stuff if you ask me.

VERY HEAVY, and very doomsday, but hell one has to think how quickly things are falling apart

as i said before the water scares me the most, when we imported generators everyone thought we were mad, our timing on that one was priceless, when the first load shedding hit our containers just landed, we parked vans at booms and put drivers there selling generators, people were just plugging in extension cords at that stage

water issues are already upon us,, im not tempting fate or being negative do some homework on smaller little dorpies its only a matter of time and water infrustructure couldnt handle all the new estates (like yours) :whistling:
