Sounds like the same group I was in. Was there a pretty strong rider (not me btw) with a maroon maties top in that group?

I had a shocking yellow top on and riding black/white BMC .. There was a Maties rider at some point yes.

So question is .. How do you get someone like that to actually fall back and have a rest and get others todo bit shorter pulls and make whole pack go faster?

L:

But would the whole pack go faster if he takes shorter turns if he is so much stronger than the rest?

I think these things usually sort themselves out. The second rider just wait until the hero upfront tires enough to comfortably pass or gets gatvol enough and pulls over, whichever happens first. No need for the second rider to kill himself to help save the front oke from himself.

OK, doesn't really sound familiar but I couldn't see much through the tears to be honest.

Ok, I pulled some segments from Stava for you:

Hells - Average up was 20.7km/h

Rolling hills 31 ish

Flats - Hard to judge due to wind but around 40 ish.

Use strava to check exact speeds all over the route

You're a beast....

The "flat" section, (Malmesbury Farms) is where we train, I have a PR there of only 30.3km/h average on my MTB, you did 43 now.. Madness...

Rode City Cycling Club mixed tandem, from just before Klipheuwel, where we started picking up some stragglers. Pulled this little bunch, and others that we came across, from there through the Windmeul section, and all the way until about 10Km from the finish, and by then we had a sizeable bunch sitting on our wheel. Long time effort on the front into the wind, but the bunch fortunately gave us much need assistance from there until the finish line ! A woman rider in USN kit (D group number) was a champ in rallying the other riders into a couple of pushes in the dying (literally) Km's ! Was a tough ride, but we finished 3:21.

We are pretty savage :P And there may have been a real wind and about 7 of of us hammering along.

Most amateurs don't follow the etiquette of taking a turn in front.

True.

Maybe they're too nervous of getting dropped or something.

Getting dropped is like a terrible nightmare for most amateurs.

Not so much, they grind away and pick up the pace so much as they come through that they leave everyone behind. 30-60 seconds later they are toast and bitch about no one working.

They have yet to understand the fact that they need to ease up as they come off and that coming off does not mean you are still pacing.

a constant 32kph (or whatever) for an hour is way better than 40kpk for 50 seconds then 20 kph while everyone catches up and in that time the dudes catching up are blowing. so the speed drops and drops and drops.

Ho well they will learn one day.

Yes, there's the occasional surge specialist

Most hang back and wait until they smell the white chalk before they burn some matches

I saw that lone rider in Sky kit crossing the line.......

That's definitely me... Hahhaa

I was struggling with my set-up.

I had cramps, lower back pain and ass bone pain.. Omg. Even I couldn't follow slower groups hahaha it was nightmare to me!!!!

I just change my set-up. I hope it works for this sunday :)

It's called guttering.

Burn the matches of those that challenge you and/or not supply them with any benefit of your effort in the wind.

In pure racing, teams would do that to each other.

With bunch riding, it's a bit strange.

It's quite curious how every rider kills themselves to hang onto the front group in a guttering situation instead of just simply forming a second echelon and then moving at a similar pace as the first group.  When the direction changes everyone's one big happy family again.

DJpak go for a bike setup.

This was my 1st race and i did the 52km.

I very much enjoyed the ride until i got to the R45.

I was averaging around 25km but when I hit the R45 i was just going slower and slower that i was averaging 10km.

100kg + rider on a road bike with such a road surface is a no no.

I saw the road bikes climb the pavements to ride on the walking path.

It was bad!

Today my ass still hurts.

None the less, i'm glad i did it and kudo's to the friendly peeps I met along the way.

Loved it! Much better than last year although the wind was a bit rough on the way back. still I'm quite happy with my 3:23 considering I am not a roadie and refuse to shave my legs.
