Yes if you know what to look for...If you don't take along a mate who knows what to look for.

I have got excellent used bike buys .

1.Check frame and seat-post for cracks and more than the usual wear and tear.

2.check crank and BB assembly  there should be no play.

3.Check headset for play

3 .check components for wear ...gears change through the gears, wheels spin freely without wobbles or grating noises.Brakes bite and release smoothly.

4 check shocks for oil leaks and  scratched stanchions,if it has, check the settings lockout ,etc

Know what the replacement bits are going to cost you...chain cluster chainrings, brakepads,Bike service, shock service

Hope you find that dream bike

Maybe Admin could put a BUYER'S CHECKLIST together in a printable format, so peeps have a guideline to go through when checking a bike?

I could get a deal on a 2nd hand S-works Stumpjumper fsr. My dream bike, it was at a bike shop, absolutely mint. New one R107 000, I could get it for R70 000. I did not buy it, because frames break, and there is no warranty on a 2nd owner bike. If that frame breaks, a new one is about R45 000. So I bought what I could afford new. But thats just me.

.... who here has second hand bikes?

I have "2"

May be it will help you if the guys show hands.

I bought my MTB 2nd hand.. the first bike I bought 2nd hand, and I'm still happy with it.

yes.

i bought a few that got me into mtb'ing.

then got a new bike.

sometimes i think a used good bike/frame is the way to go and just upgrade components

Currently have 1 x full second hand buy and 1 x built bike from second hand parts and a new fork.

Over the years .... many a bike build from second hand goodies.

OP, best thing is to have cash in hand when you are looking so that you can snap up a great deal before some other riff raff buys it before you.

My Rocky was advertised in the morning, I called first and bought it that evening .... there were others just as keen wanting to buy the bike. I know this for sure as I met one of the guys interested a couple of days later .... he was hoping I would fall through on the deal.

Great little bike that I own and really enjoy riding.

I have only ever bought second hand bikes and frames.

Never ever bought new. I bought parts new when I couldn't get what I wanted or when I was impatient. Not all parts though. General wear and tear bits I prefer to buy new: brake pads, chains, pivot bearings, headsets, bbs. Parts like cassettes, chain rings, brake discs and tyres really just depend on the condition.

At one point I had 4 bikes all second hand. But I've downsized to 2 bikes for now.

Maintanence is expensive

One word. Insurance.

Another way of getting a good deal is to speak to LBS around about Sept/Oct ask for the prices of last years models.

Bought a 2011 model TranceX2 in 2012 just after the 2013 model was released. 1/3 off original price and warranty in tact.

I've only ever had 1 brand new bike. It's a lekker feeling knowing you're the first to hammer it.

Doesn't protect against theft and JRA!

Mine are only insured against theft, and damage caused while transporting them. I have a Epic, a Stumpjumper expert, a Camber Evo expert, and a carbon Roubaix. Can you imagine how much insurance I would pay if I had all risk cover on all of them.
