Like to get yhe advice from the more experienced hubbers on this...

Is it worth buying a used MTB bike? Not all of us can always afford the new Specialized or Cannondale or Scott in the LBS with all the best components on and is somewhat "forced" if you will to look at a used bike with upgrades on it.

Have seen a couple of really eye catching 2nd hand bike on here but still im a bit sceptical of buying a used MTB.

Purely because you dont know how the bike was handled and treated.

Any advice?

YES ...... I have been buying second hand frames and parts for a longtime now and also just bought a great little second hand bike towards the end of last year.

Just make sure you check it out properly, and have a little cash spare should anything need to be serviced after purchase that you could not detect at the time of viewing.

Agreed, best deal around........if you know what you are looking at, otherwise, get someone who does! Most of my bikes have been 2nd hand or I buy the frame and build myself, but that is expensive!

I built a complete 29er full carbon Mtb , carbon forks, carbon crank, xt groupset.

Everything bought on the hub as second hand but never been used, saved myself a fortune.

Go for it!

101%. It's incredible if you look around what you can pick up. I've had nothing but good deals with all my buys.

Just wait until after the Argus then you'll get a bargain.... or guys getting divorced. Toys get punted first.

Showoffs are our bread and butter, too much money and mouth with no lungs! Buy top notch kit to show off to their mates and then realize riding is actually quite hard, hate it, then sell everything, unused and at a fraction of what they paid.................

.............to US, wahoooo!!!!!

My current bike as well as the previous one is second hand. Paid R5000 for my first dualy, valued at R10 000 and my current bikes I payed R9000, marked price about R16000. If you take your time and do some looking around you will find the ONE.

A big bonus is you can buy a bikes that has loads of upgrades already on it.

If you find a bike you like post it here and you will have many Hubbers with too little work to do trawling the InterWeb and scrutinising the photos on your behalf! Some may even go and look at it for you, even if you don't ask!

Yes if you know what to look for...If you don't take along a mate who knows what to look for.

I have got excellent used bike buys .

1.Check frame and seat-post for cracks and more than the usual wear and tear.

2.check crank and BB assembly  there should be no play.

3.Check headset for play

3 .check components for wear ...gears change through the gears, wheels spin freely without wobbles or grating noises.Brakes bite and release smoothly.

4 check shocks for oil leaks and  scratched stanchions,if it has, check the settings lockout ,etc

Know what the replacement bits are going to cost you...chain cluster chainrings, brakepads,Bike service, shock service

Hope you find that dream bike
