Orbital trainer. Both directions. It isn't what I'd call enjoyable, but it works.

EDIT: If you have bad knees or just dislike running, this is a compromise.

Running. Even contemplating a half marathon this year..

When you get into your stride and the km's are peeling away its an awesome feeling.

Its a fantastic cardio workout. I try and so an hour a week - thats 12km at current pace.

I see the future and it has duathlon in it

Running: Sprints. It improves pedaling power

Kettle Bells: activates all the muscles used when trail riding

Weights: Esspecially upper & lower back exercises

The dead lift: To many benefits to list here.

A good stretching regime.

Road biking ( yuck )

As mentioned before: Lot's of core exercises.

Check out Gee Atherton's workout regime. It is hardcore beyond believe!

(Gee's body doesn't look half bad either)

Running as mentioned - it also helps with keeping the weight down - and then I've got a small circuit with some loose weights that I'll do a couple of times a week. Not anything hardcore, but it helps to tone the upper body. Oh, and some core exercises...

Swimming (because I hate running anything further than 100m)

Stair master intervals.

Sprinting

Dead Lifts / Lunges / Reverse Lunges

Medicine ball workouts for core

For mtbking I find that my forearms sometimes take strain, especially when I have been off the mtb for a long time (like in the winter months). Doing some hi rep low weight (dumbbell) wrist forearm / exercises such as palm up and palm down wrist curls, hammer curls and using a gyro ball helps.

Overall it’s difficult to beat running and swimming for good cross training benefits.

If you want to keep it simple and train at home without the hassle of going out running or to a pool then some simple body weight exercises such as press ups, plank variations, balance board exercises also work well.

The plus to this is that people can also get into tri because they are already doing the training for it.
