When should one start training for this event? I'm asking for a friend.

I have a similar sounding friend. Every year, he doesn't so much training as rehearse. A couple of weeks of 30km and 50km cycles; a rehearsal or two at 70 km and he's good to go!

I suspect conventional wisdom would suggest starting +/-3 months beforehand, although some may disagree, depending on background fitness. But if your friend is generally fit beforehand, is willing to suffer a bit on the day (sore arse, cramp etc), and only has ambitions of finishing, now might not be too late? But he/she may not thank you for that advice during/afterwards...!

In 2004, I rode my bike the day before the race to check if it was still in working order, with only the Hyper2Hyper as the only other ride I did on my bike since the 2003 edition. It's doable, but not advisable.

Needless to say I was broken after 5:21 in the saddle and swore blind I'd never do that race again... 2015 will be my 14th consecutive one (and I had a "want to forget" ride in 2012 from D).

I think 2012 was my next lowest year of training after 2004, and I also had a k@k 3:08 ride in D that year.

All jokes aside a friend is doing this for the first time on a Mountainbike and he only did a decent distance this week-end past, I just wonder if he is going to finish.

That's awesome. We will have at least 2 mountain bikes in the 94.7 this year.

He has 6 hours to finish the race. That's an average of 15.78km/h. Easy as pie. :whistling: What was his distance and avg speed?

One of our psycho members is doing it on a Uni to raise money for autism.  It's going to be a loooooong day for him!

If anyone is keen to sponsor him or donate, PM me.

Last year I rode a total of 380km (approx 17 hours on the bike) in the three months before the 94.7

Needless to say it was a sufferfest. I took an easy ride in the 1st half of the race and spun easy gears up the hills. I still cramped going up Cedar road and limped over the 3 little hills in Steyn City.

Finished in a respectable 3h41min considering the training time put in.

My cycling fittness did help as I knew how to maximise the few training rides I did.

If you are a novice and have not started training then I would suggest giving this year a skip.

If you have cycled before, there is still time. Just be prepared to suffer and remember that you are not going to break any time records.

It all depends on your their untrained base level, how fast they want to go, and how little they want to suffer.

I did 3:18 in 2006 with no training at all. Race day was the first time on the bike in 9 months, but I was doing a lot of other sport at the time.

From years of chasing the (real 6h) finishing cut for Two Oceans with varying degrees of training under the belt - I can tell you that the biggest trap your friend can fall in is to "soak up the atmosphere " and hang around the early tables. Get the major part of the job done and hang about at the Steyn City waterpoint. The required ave. goes up very quickly when you stand still.

He still got 4 weekends and weeks (obviously) that he can train. If he uses both Saturdays and Sundays and go like 50km both days  this weekend, 65km the next weekend, 75km the next he will make it easily. He should go ride those in the Cradle at steady pace. During the week if he can be can do short rides (20-25km twice ir so).... Just to finish is easy with 4 weeks left....

I on the other hand have only  2 weekends in the road bike left, other 2 is for enduro and DH races. Doubt I'll make my goal this year :(

(only started 'training' 2 months ago)

Edit: my 'training' is actually just riding more, not this whole doing intervals / high intensity stuff and watching power outputs and and...that stuff I'll leave for another year

You did 120km rides on you own. You are cruising. I have never done more than 2h on my own in training. Ever.

With the amount of riding you have been doing, coupled with the amount of Strongish riders in "I" batch if we work together I am sure we can all get a good time.

Good luck with the Shova this wkn

So thinking glass half-full for a second....all weekends before 94.7, you'll be on a bike doing something.....tick!

If you had some time during the week to ride, then do something intensive? Do spinning classes? Or some work on an IDT? Intervals don't need to be hyper-technical: go hard for a short period, recover a bit, repeat a few times. I've been off the road for the last 10 days, but managed 3 or 4 intervals sessions on an IDT and my road fitness has taken a noticeable step-up.

Plenty of time left before 94.7 to make (or break ) the day!
