After the mini Argus I am really looking for some big races to train towards and push myself.  Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on the Knysna road race in July?  How is the weather then cold, wet and windy or mild and pleasant generally?

all of the above i.e. cold, wet & windy. To get mild & pleasant it has to be a leap year.

Last year it was 2 Degrees at the start. Lots of climbing. Total ascent is something like 1550m.

Stop complaining.

Just get out and ride!

Try making a weekend of it. Take the family or some mates, arrive on the Friday, ride one of the mountainbike races on Saturday and then the road race on Sunday. The longer mtb races are tough, especially if it is muddy (pretty normal) and the road race is tougher than the Argus (for me anyway). The longer mtb races are seeding races for 2016 Argus, but the road race is not (sadly). Weather can be anything from mild, windless and sunny to howling mad freezing rain. You never know. June / July are the months with the lowest rainfall in Knysna, but because it is a pretty high rainfall area, the chances are always there.

Knysna itself is worth the visit. Lots of interesting touristy things, pubs, scenery. If you decide to go, book your accommodation first, and try get it as close to the start as you can. A nice place to stay makes it easy for the family to enjoy. Knysna has lots of good guest houses and cottages, but they book up quickly and you don't want a grim place far away.

I must have been very fortunate ...

Had great weather every time I've been down and I doubt whether they were all leap years. LOL

Oh crap ... I've probably just jinxed it for this year.

One should also be concerned about the weather leading up to July ... getting in the training can be a mission.

I think many have been left considering alternative challenges after mini-Argus.

I 2nd DJR, make a weekend of it.

We have gone the last few years and do the MTB and road races. It really is something we look forward to.

The new road route is fantastic, some nice climbs! the old route was not so nice. It generally is very cold though so winter gear is a must. 2 degrees for both races last year.

I have booked my accommodation already and myself and family and friends are making a loooooong weekend of it. Arriving the Thurs and leaving the Tuesday.

We found accommodation in sedgefield which is only 25km's from Knysna.

I absolutely love the garden route any time of the year.

I will also be doing the 50km MTB saturday and 109km road the sunday or that is the plan at least. :whistling:

When is Lance due?

12 April. Hence the lack of riding and increased amount of building, painting and unpacking that is being done this week. :P

Also looking to do a UK/Belgium trip in August, so may be a good test :P

When they are that small it is actually "easy"(relative term) to travel with them, just allow extra time for extra stops, once they start to get mobile it's a whole new ballgame...

I was going to do a relaxed MTB on Sat and race Sunday, but on the first climb the bug bit and  I hammered it and came in top 20. I don't have suspension on the 26er so was a tad shaken, but a nice lunch and bit of relaxing around the estate and I was ready for the 109KM.

I was with the leaders up the first climb till the chain snapped at top of climb, then rode at the front of next group without big ring the whole ride. Legs felt it after 95km, but I would not give up the 50km!

Depends how often you MTB, okes like Donovan will smash the 80km and then be ready to smash the 109km the next day.

The MTB is really worth it if going up for the weekend!
