Tech skill and rider weight - does it make a difference?

So just an observation .... I generally find that as I lose weight I seem to be a bit better on technical sections. Anyone else notice this?

I don't seem so much to be banging from rock/obstacle to rock/obstacle ..... yes I know fat asses should stay out the way but we do try ;)

Dont know personally,

but surely you can pay more concentration as you are fitter,

less focus on your breathing.

As for the weight loss you probably slightly stronger and can muscle the bike around a bit more, this also relates to being fitter as well.

Im farely light and find i bounce around a bit when i am not as fit purely because i am not flowing with the trail.

This has got a lot to do with core strength as well as I assume that you lost weight as a combination of eating better and training better? Core strength makes a moer of a difference on tech sections as your overall balance an posture is just better on the bike you are lower down lower c of g etc.

You might have also lost weight because you were riding more? More riding equals better skills unless if you take the ..."cat" route every time ;)

This is just basic physics. Lighter objects have less opposing force there fore move easier.

As I have lost weight my crashes have gone from epic to just painful.  Given velocity remains equal and mass is decreased, momentum decreases also.

Trust me definitely not riding more, as some here can attest I always ride lots even when I'm 'fat'

This 100% down to weight loss :)

Mr BigBen your observation is correct in my case as well.  When things get technical when I am fatter than usual   (like at the moment) I do not have nerve to try to do things.  If things get a bit technical I will rather get off, walk the stretch.

When I was about 3 kg lighter that stretch did not bother me at all.  And I did not have the level of fitness then, than I have now.

Also found that gravity is a wicked mistress.  On uphills I have a hard time dragging my fat 84.1 kg up a hill.  But on downhills i get way more speed than the lighter me can get.  And if that hill becomes a bit technical my sub 80kg ass would climb and jump and play round.  With my 84.1 kg ass I can't do it, of if i try to do thing the sub 80kg me could do, I just can't do it.  Is as if I try to do it, but I just can't.

Yes.

I can't wait untl my weight comes off... At the moment by the time I get to the fun bits, lugging my 105kg frame around is pretty darn tiring and has a definite effect on how effectively I'm able to apply my skills.

As for the fitness vs weight debate - you can be as fit as you want, but if you're lugging an extra 5kg up the climbs, it's still an extra 5kg. You may be able to get up there faster, but the work that you've expended will always be higher, ad as a result you will be more tired. A tired body does not do technical stuff as well as a fresh body. It also takes more effort / strength to change direction and position, which means more work, more exhaustion and so on.

So yes, it does...
