HI Hubbers

Has anyone got advice on how best to remove a press fit BB without having to take it to the LBS.

Cheers

I have seen some home made jigs with a threaded bar, nuts and some strong washers.

I need to service mine so going to be keeping an eye on this thread. Im too cheap to buy a puller for something I wouldnt use often.

A.) Use a puller (A proper one)

B.) Take it to the LBS..

C.) Do not take this advice and damage the BB shell and have to purchase new frame...

Irrespective of the marketing hype on bigger, lighter tubes etc pressfit BBs are a step backwards.  After a while the left one will fall out on its own and the other is removed destructivly unless you have the best tools.  I wouldn't consider servicing a sealed bearing anyway.  If you compare the bearing cost vs the time cost and sub standard performance afterwards you may as well bite the bullet and fit a new one.

Removing it is easy. Google pressfit bb removal tool. It looks like a piece of pipe with some slots cut into it and then the ends are flared open. This and a few gentle taps with a hammer. This is what the lbs will do. Fitting the new one you will need a decent bearing press.

I have a number of pushers and pullers but the best tool to fit a new BB is the Record carpenter's vice on my bench.  Two man job to hold the frame straight and then be sure not to clamp the chain stays by mistake.  Fit one side and then the other.

A piece of 24 mm, or slightly smaller, o/d pipe, with 4 slots cut into it lengthwise with a hacksaw or thin grinder disc, so that it can flair open, will do the trick for removal. Otherwise a normal drift punch with a round blunt point will also work.

For fitting the bb a M20 X 120 mm bolt and nut with two large flat washers will work just as well as any bearing press. (M24 will work even better, if it will fit through bb.) Remember to grease the outside of the bb very lightly.

If you really stuck a rubber mallet can be used to tap the cups in to the frame, but you need to be careful.
