the latter. Cycling is pain free it's when I cycle competitively that's when the pain kicks in & I can't turn that off...yet.

If I go Gap Cover I'll only have to wait a max of 12months.

In the early days ACL repair was a unknown entity and guys like Daan du Plessis and Spike did the learning curve and became masters (and are justified in billing accordingly). These days the procedure has been sorted out and many jigs are available to the surgeon. It really is possible for any good surgeon that do knees regularly to obtain good and excellent results. I will not feel disadvantaged to have mine repaired by any of the many ortho's around CPT as long as they have done a good number of the procedures.

Price and reputation are not good markers of outcome. Two options: go where the Ortho's refer themselves or ask the Anaethetists - they work with many different sugeons up close.

I would not wait if it is destroying value in my life. Get it done and move on. Never ask only one person and ignore people who have experience of only one case (their own). Sela

Go see Dr Sirk Loots (Orthopedic Surgeon).  He is an avid mtbér and will not charge you an arm and a leg.  His practice is at Chris Barnard Hospital in the city. He operated on me and did a great job.

rode a few days with him on the freedom challenge, if his surgery method is anything like the calm, measured manner he rode to a 2nd place at this race then I'd consider him a good option.

ok, so your knee starts giving you grief.

you get the set-up done correctly just to make sure.

would the surgeons recommended above do a diagnosis and then recommend either physio or biokineticist before surgery ?

or do you go to a physio or biokineticist first ?

This is the crux of it. Have you ever heard of a Physio or Bio that have been sued for referring a pt too late? I haven't. It is impossible that it never happens. The first question a surgeon gets asked at a hearing is "what alternative treatment options did you consider?" Surgeons see many more patients than what they operate - the rest get referred (in this case deferred?). Every patient needs a long term treatment plan. Mechanical problems can be delayed but mostly not corrected in the long run. If you don't trust the surgeon to make the right decision then you are seeing the wrong person.

I suppose conversation should go:

"I need to know how to avoid surgery after your diagnosis."

Dr Richard von Bormann  @ http://www.capetownkneesurgery.co.za/

I'm recovering from a Meniscus tear done by V/Bormann. Cannot run yet (first sport) but started cycling 10 days after the op. Withing 3 months all went well with the recovery and were doing 3hr rides without any hassles. Will be starting my running in baby steps from next week. So ... happy with Boremann.

Not sure if any mentioned doctor van Der merve (don't know his first name) at sports science institute in new lands. Had a mate who worked for him and apparently he seriously is top not...but like all these guys he charges like one too...gap cover would pay but as you say you'll need to wait for the 12 month waiting period to be over. In my opinion it's not such a bad thing to have in general though, especially if you on a plan that currently only covers 100%. R275 a month and you covered up to 500% isn't too bad...

operating is already the last resort I've been walking/riding around with a torn ligament for more than 5 years now. With all due respect what is the chiro going to tell me that I don't already know after 2 MRI scans, one 2 weeks ago & the other 5 years ago?

Unless you are going skiing or trail running having a ACL repair done is not going to change your life

He redid my dads knee three years ago and now his new knee is stronger than his normal one! At sport science they were amazing with the rehab! He was there every morning for an hour for 3 months!
