Guys, any advice on what is the best way to charge all the electronics you are carrying (phone, lights, tracker etc).

do you carry separate chargers for each one or is the some clever gizmo that you can use for everything.

I carried a charger for each (phone, light and tracker) and also a multi 2 pin adaptor.

Mark your chargers with your name so that when you leave them somewhere, they can be returned to you :)

If you're a serious racing snake and won't be sleeping much (and hence won't have time to charge your gizmos), you'd need to invest in a dyno-hub. That's another story.

  • Carry as few electronics as possible and their relevant chargers.
  • The ones you do take, use sparingly - lights on dim, turn phone on to use otherwise leave off, turn bluetooth, wifi off etc etc... You'll be surprised how long they last when not constantly used as in the 'real world'.
  • Carry an external usb battery charger unit with multiple adaptors to fit all your electronics. This will assist in boosting charge on the required items if needed out in the sticks when you weren't able to charge up the night before - this will happen, guaranteed (Probably at Vuvu... by which time you're finally over your gizmo fixations and leave them uncharged until Rhodes!).
  • If this isn't enough - then get a dynamo hub. Unless you're planning on doing A LOT of night riding, this isn't really necessary.

Hmmm after yesterdays wisdom chat with Mike and the new knowledge and ideas, maybe I must enter again, since I've now got the training ground in my backyard.......

Next year need to loose 10kg and get a new bike, will be good to go in 18 months time.....

But you might see me en route, maybe one eye sleeping in my sleeping bag under a bush, maybe making coffee for a late night wanderer, maybe taking taking a snappy of a mud invested cyclist........but you'll see me somewhere

I really want to go this!  I've spoken to a few people who have done it in years gone by and it sounds like a proper challenge!

Just need to sell my car to get the entry fee.  But I guess that's ok since I'll also have to cycle everywhere to get the training in!

Really want to do it!

is this the same hub that (I think) Mike Woolnough used on the munga?

One of the blogs mentioned the dynamo failed half way through the ride

Use a Solar rechargeable power bank, I just bought one the other day of OneDayOnly

RASA is mid-winter, short days means less available sunlight.

Also remember that you're riding in the dark. A lot.

The dynamo hub option is more for those racing and not spending as much time sleeping (and recharging batteries) as others.

For those of us planning a solid 24 day finish, charging was not really an issue.

Just more stuff to carry. Dynamo hub is the answer if you're looking for charge on the go capabilities.
