What a ridiculous situation at the Vuelta. Opening stage won't count because it was so poorly designed. How does that even happen?

Yip, news just in that the TTT will no longer count towards overall GC.

"Vuelta a Espana organizers announced Friday that Saturday’s first stage will not count toward the overall standings after criticism that the team time trial circuit was too dangerous."

“The technical jury, after listening to the concerns of teams and riders and carrying out a reconnaissance of the circuit and getting the backing of the UCI has decided that registered times will count towards team but not individual standings,” organizers announced.

What a farce.

GC riders, and particularly modern ones need to HTFU.

I don't see Nibbles moaning, just "I once fell off my bike in the wet" Froome and co

I can understand their gripes as TT bikes are not known to be very good on the handling side. But then you don't have to ride a TT bike in a TTT.

Oh well time to find something else to do tomorrow afternoon

Fair enough for regular stages, I agree there's always room for the inclusion of cobbles or a bit of dirt road on the odd occasion to spice things up. But this is not Classics racing, and I'd also like to think we've come a helluva long way in this sport since the days of old bikes on gravel mountain passes on 20kg forged steel bikes.

But I definitely don't agree when it comes to a TTT. You've got 9 riders with only a view of each others arses from a few cm away, hands far away from brakes on TT bars. A recipe for carnage on a course like that. In this case, the organisers do have something to answer for IMO.

Aah

Would've been so much fun to watch

Still gonna be, you think they're not going to go all out to win it??

Guy's will be guys, and ego will push them

Could be a very short race for someone!

The reason I feel it's just bloody ridiculous to have a course like that. The organisers are freekin idiots.

Can't understand why it doesn't count. There are not rules that stipulate the use of a TT bike for the time trial. Their regular race machines are much easier to handle and there's aero rims that accommodate up to 28mm tyres available.

All this equipment that manufacturers charge us mere mortals an arm and a leg form developed for the pros and they're too scared to use the technology.

thumbs down

What a joke of a stage, how many months if not years did they have to submit the route for approval and which clown at the UCI or Spanish federation approved it?

Clearly priorities are not cycling but rather an advert for the tourism industry in the area

Maybe they should have used mtb's instead...now there's an idea for the future

Even better: make them race along the beach on fat bikes then finish with a run up the stairs in their cleats with their bikes on their backs. That would make for interesting viewing (and media coverage). I mean, who needs actual roads anyway? So what if this is a road race....

"It should be a good race, and I’m curious to see what happens inside the Astana team at the Vuelta because they brought too many leaders. Aru, Nibali and Landa will be like three lions in a cage fighting with each other. Landa is leaving for Team Sky but is young, ambitious and so difficult to control. Nibali is motivated to win a Grand Tour and Aru, too. I think it’s going to be a mess for my friend Vino but it will be entertaining for the rest of us..."
