Hello fellow mountain bikers.

I have read though many, MANY threads regarding mountain bike tyres, yet I am just as confused as before. In fact, I am probably more confused than ever before. What I have concluded is that its 50% preference, and 50% required riding type (terrain).

With having said that, I am in search of advice for selecting the most appropriate tyres for me specifically. I live in Cape Town, and I ride mostly single track. I am 25, and weigh approximately 75kg (185cm tall). I am not a pro (no duh...), but I like to think I go pretty quickly down the single tracks, although I only started riding last year November. I ride a Large 2014 Giant Trance 02, which has a 650B 27.5" wheel-set.

PLEASE NOTE: I am looking for Maxxis tyre options and combinations ONLY! If you are going to contribute to this thread, please comment with a combination of both front AND rear tyre options, rather than saying things like "aah, why Maxxis?", or "Continental is much better!" etc etc etc. I have used Continental's on my previous bike, and I am wanting to try out Maxxis tyres in particular, so please just accept that, and give me constructive advice... If any.

Thank you in advance to those who find the time to give me genuine options and combinations ;)

Here is a photo of my exact bike below:

Let's not beat around the bush here...

1) You're going to get a million different opinions. Tyres are a personal choice item, so asking for a good combination on this forum is a largely pointless exercise. It's the one technical Q&A I've learnt to just scroll past because there is no point in getting involved with genuine input.

2) Wanting an opinion but closing your options to a single brand is just plain silly, regardless of your reasons for doing so.

I fully agree with Martin above.

Saying that, in maxxis there are only 2 you should consider for ultimate grip given your riding style. Minion DHF and High Roller 2, both in 3c compound and the EXO carcasses

I expected one or two responses like this. Just not the very first one. Its like you didn't bother reading my post.

As stated in my initial post, I understand that 50% of this is indeed preference (such as myself only wanting to try Maxxis as my second tyre brand). So all you have done is literally quoted what I have stated above. I thought that by putting in all the effort above with regards to mentioning every aspect of mountain biking for me (weight, bike, terrain etc.), that I could receive responses from members with similarities to myself, who can recommend tyres from Maxxis that they really found worth the purchase. I dont think it is fair to throw this thread in the same bucket as those who have started threads merely saying: "I like mountain biking mainly, so what front and rear tyre should I buy?. I am not looking for a thousand and one responses, but rather just a mere few who can recommend a tyres from Maxxis, who closely match my specifications above.

So if you still feel this way about these type of Q&A's, then maybe you should in fact just "scroll on"...

In terms of ultimate combo though, I would recommend the Schwalbe combo of Magic Mary and Rock Razor in super gravity carcasses with their trail star or vert star compound

Ooooooh I lovvit when you talk dirty! ;)

Ok, I'll bite.

Based on this "What I have concluded is that its 50% preference, and 50% required riding type (terrain)", what you're looking for is the brand you like suited to the terrain you ride most often.

You are halfway there, now go read the Maxxis brochure and pick out the recommended terrain and if it matches to the trails you ride, buy it, or just take R'mans advice and quit your saucy comments aimed at Martin - He's right btw, you'll see in time.

Oh, one more thing. A new colour for your lycra, binnepoes pink is all the rage at the moment.

You're misunderstanding. That's my fault, you don't have the context you'd have as a long-time member (you're new, welcome!), so I apologise.

Here's the context: I've been riding (and racing) mountain bikes since 1989 and have ridden more tyre brands, compounds and tread patterns since then than most people will do in a lifetime. How many different ones? Heck, probably close to 50 or 60.

Why am I telling you this? Not because I'm being arrogant, not because I'm showing off, and definitely not because I'm trying to dismiss what you've said. I read your post in detail. The fact that I read it in detail is *exactly* why I cut to the chase quickly without making a recommendation. It's impossible to make a tyre recommendation without a significant amount of info and insight into exactly how, where, why you ride, and also what your expectations are. Because of this, I'm still not going to give any advice. You'll find 50 different opinions on combinations from 50 different individuals who have each ridden only one other combo to the one they now proclaim to be the best. The statistics aren't great...

When you're ready to be open to more than one brand (not that there's anything wrong with Maxxis rubber), let us know.

Edit: Spelling. I do pay attention to detail! ;)

Hi, I have the same bike as you. On my 26 trance I used to have a Maxxis Minion 2.5 on the front and loved it. I'm not sure if you get them locally in 650 though. On my 650 I've got the onza citius 2.4 on the front and I'm very happy with it. Quite similar. On the back I've got a wtb trail boss also 2.4. Also great grippy tyre.

My SO has an intrigue with the same rear tyre, but she's rolling an onza ibex 2.4 front. At some point we'll swap front wheels and do a comparison of the ibex and the citius.

Ardent The do-it-all trail tire

  • EXO Protection offered in select models
  • Aggressive, high-volume tread
27.5X2.40 61-584 60 FOLDABLE 775 DUAL 60 EXO/TR

Black

I would recommend this IF you can find them!

I ride Ardent 26x2.4 Downhill 2 ply casing in Super Tacky compound (tubeless setup) and its amazing. Still looking for another one as I only ever found one at Olympic Cycles. (i have a Nobby Nic on the back).

On my 27.5" bike Im riding other brands as I couldnt find a Maxxis tyre I wanted.

If maxxis is your only choice then goodluck finding a rad tyre, Unless your lbs will order for you.

P.S. the Ikon I had was skittish and I was never sure if it was actually going to grip or not, especially in the wet.

I was thinking about explaining myself in further detail as I can see a number of you are really struggling to understand, but I have decided not to, because although you might think its not that obvious, it is very clear that the 3 of you are "friends" on this forum.. very cute. I'm sure you guys run this town, right? Very cool...

Oh wait, Martin I didn't realise. Let me quickly bow down before you. Not. I don't give a damn about how long you have been riding your bicycle for. And no, I don't need an introduction to your life either. It doesn't interest me. If it did, I would've asked. Secondly, who do you think you are "shutting" down a topic because YOU may think its pointless? Do you run this forum? Thought not. If you felt this was a pointless topic, you should've just "scrolled on" like you mentioned earlier. But no, you had to write something to show the newbie how "badass" of a rider you think you are. Hilarious... Secondly, (Deon), you sound very classy? I do hope I never have to meet you. I feel sorry for your family - They must be disappointed. Thirdly, MariusKlokie - I know, I apologise. I didn't realise the longer you have been riding your bicycle for, the more outspoken you are allowed to be here. I must still learn that, hence I am a "newbie". So I apologise for that. Not. I think what you few forget, is that you may have a few "posts" on this forum, but thats all you have, and thats all you are. Nothing more, nothing less. So it makes me laugh that you think you can demand respect from the "newbies" right off the bat merely by the number of posts one has accumulated. I believe this is called arrogance, as much as you may think not. And to just prove that to you, have a look at the members such as "Norman" and "Ridin Dirty" etc who have responded to my initial post. These guys have the least 'posts', yet they are the most willing to help.

Have a good weekend everyone!

P.S. - Thank you to those who contributed with recommendations (In the future, rather don't - Its pointless and you know nothing according to the "top posters").

You are going to battle to find any decent 27.5 maxxis tyres,

Been a maxxis fan for a long time

Been through 3 epics on them.

How ever currentlr ridingg in cape town, being also relatively quick,

Onza canis 2.25 for front and rear if yo want fast rolling otherwise 2.25 or 2.4 onza citius or ibex.

The wtb trailboss front bee line rear is also a great option.

However go to maxxis website and read what they say since you only want maxxis
