Areo-Bars/Tri-Bars for Adventure Racing/Touring

So I've entered a long distance adventure race. Aero-bars are allowed (as there is no group riding.)

I've never used aero-bars. I've booked an appointment with cycle-fit, but I checked with them and they don't stock any, so I need to get before my appointment with them.

I've read a couple of guides to aero-bars, but they are all specific to triathlon/time trial.

Because of the long distance of the event I'm doing, comfort is much more important than aero.

So with that in mind, what should I look out for when choosing aero-bars to buy? Any recommendations welcome.

why would you need TT bars for an "adventure" race ? doubt the bars are going to bring you comfort, especially if you not used to riding in that position for long periods.

My understanding is that aero bar can be set up in a way that they are very comfortable, more comfortable than the hoods of a drop bar, while still providing an aero advantage.

So had a look at what was available at my LBSs.

I presume that I want J bars, and not straight or S bar? Also I presume I don't need stack height adjustability?

You'll move the pace of the slowest rider. If you're not the slowest rider, you may end up pushing or pulling the slowest rider.

Kinetic Double moo at the end of the month?

Trans-Afrika. Most of the other riders use aero bars, and the is not much (read none) group riding.

They're actually used by a number of long distance adventure cyclists. So much so that these days they're quite 'in vogue' and are used without understanding the benefits and simply to have them on the bike to look 'cool'. Many long distance cyclists look for alternative hand (and body) positions during tough long stretches. Tri bars offer this and are apparently quite comfortable. More useful in a Trans Africa kind of race over a RASA kind of race...

Aaaah OK - I heard 'adventure racing' as in the multi-sport in team format - not adventure mountainbike racing :)

wow - enjoy!!!! Slightly envious

Ideally you would look for something made for it, unfortunately in SA this is not going to happen.

Personally I would go for something like a Jones H-Bar or equivalent.

Good look and enjoy the ride!!

Straight and s-bars are very extreme and your wrists will suffer.

These seem to be very popular with the guys touring around Europe at the moment.

I have put them on my bike for trans afrika, not just for the aero position but they provide the option to strap a sleeping bag in front, as well as just another couple of options for varying riding position, which I think will be important.
