I monitor my gait with my garmin fenix. I had a small hip injury on the right side so I run asymmetrically, especially when I speed up. So I tend to over react when I get a niggly feeling in the right knee

That's a really handy feature. I had knee reconstruction due to rugby stupidity and they used a bit of my hammy to fix it so I can feel the awkwardness in my stride when I'm sprinting or climbing Westcliff stairs. Have you managed to successfully correct the imbalance?

What kind of gait info does the fenix provide?

Hey all, newish to running and I seriously can't go through this whole thread so sorry if it's been covered already.

Any of you Jozi runners go to the Ranburg Runner in Linden and how do you rate their advice?

Spent an hour there this morning and I was very impressed....but then my running knowledge is very limited.

Awesome shop. Honest, knowledgeable bunch, with good selection of 'proper' running brands.

Cheers, thats certaily the impression I got.

After being "tested" in several pairs it was decided the Suacony Guide 10 was best for me. I shat myself at the price but then I've been running in a rather *** pair of Adidas Duramo and they do feel horrble when comparing them to the Saucony.

Think its worth getting cos its comfort and injury prevention I'm after, not world record pace!

Hopefully just the right motivation to get running again as I am doing NOTHING and my qualifying marathon is a month away. Dont even want to think about what the itb is going to do with the amounts I will have to throw at it this month.

Great shop, especially if Gordon is helping you. The guy has a wealth of knowledge and running experience. I think he ran something like a sub 2:30 marathon in his prime. He's also brutally honest about the shoes. He's the first "salesman" who's dissed an expensive shoe that I was interested in, pointing out its downfalls.

Unfortunately he has nothing good to say about Nike or Adidas and won't stock them, which I can sort of understand given their fashion focus, but I still think the Adidas Boston Boost is the best road shoe I've run in. But for those, there's always trusty old Poobie Naidoo's.

Was Gordon who helped me and certainly did take the p1ss out of most Adidas shoes.

I have no preference to any brand and after trying Asics, Brooks and the Saucony, based on what he explaned to me and the feel, the Saucony definitely felt great.

Thats poor actually. I never trust a salesman that disses one brand in favor of something that he is selling.

In fairness, he ditched them but I still think he's wrong about the Adidas Adios range. I don't know enough about any of the new Nike shoes to say whether it's justified, though I'm a big fan of Nike running apparel. Best quality for the money, I think.

The thing with running shoes is that technology and desigs are constantly changing. Unless you are actually running in a specific pair I dont think you are qualified to comment on them. Running shops should give recommendations based on gait etc. Not personal preference. I tried numerous brands the last year, currently I use Nike. I find them the best fit for my wonky feet, and it’s actually some of the neutral shoes with the best arch support. My local running store guru actually recommended that I keep using them, and they also dont stock Nike. They do sell Adidas though, and its their best seller???? Each to his own I guess.

My feet are also a bit wonky and very narrow. In the salesmans defence he was only dissing my entry level Adidas shoe for my type of feet, not the brand as a whole.

He explained things to me very thoroughly and wasn't trying to sell me any particular brand or the most expensive shoe. That gave me confidence.

I don't actually know where else to go in Jozi. The people at Sportsmans warehouse and Total Sports are dismal to put it mildly.

Completely off topic...

Went for my run this morning... people open their gate to reverse out. See a blur out of the corner of my eye and something knocked into the back of my legs. I turn around and see a dog charging at me. Grabbed him, he grabbed my hand. I strangled him, he pissed on me and my shoes.

Now I'm waiting for dr to open so that I can go for my shots. Hurs like a motherf$^/r.

Then take the nice people the bill for the dr...

Now I still need to run some more this afternoon and I think tomorrow's cycle will be uncomfortable with a sore hand...

Any advice for dealing with this in future? What do you guys do?
