I don't stretch before a run. I do warm-ups before hill repeats and speed work. I always stretch after training runs.  Most importantly is foam rolling... Especially after long runs. You will be swearing (a lot) but it helps with recovery.

I agree running helps for your fitness levels on the bike. The problem is your bum as you are not used to sitting for so long and I find my lower back and wrists get sore if I haven't cycled for a while.

Unfortunately, it does not work the other way around.

foam rolling is not something I've done before but actually sounds like a great idea, especially for my tight calf muscles

Another question: The main reason for starting running is to train in a limited time during the week. You guys doing cycling and running - how will running improve my cycling? EmptyB said it improved his cycling pace and climbing - what is the rest of your experiences?

I think I'm doing running wrong after reading a lot of these comments.

In terms of cardio fitness - its an absolute winner. Sprints are one of the best fitness builders I can think of. It obviously feeds to stronger cycling if you have that much bigger engine.

But to be honest running is just breaking me down.. In terms of longevity, strength, injury, I'm being defeated. I now look at cycling to build leg strength, to better get me through a run.

Running exercises calf and hamstring muscles, ergo, they will be tight. Best warm up is to walk, then jog, then run.......

Makes perfect sense....so no stretching beforehand in your opinion?

It does get better believe me.

I believe you now!! Only took about 6 months ????.

To be fair, I was only running once a week for a good few months....was spending so much time on the bike!

Probably because you do not do enough long slow distance runs.  You have said before you prefer to go balls to the wall whether cycling or running..... you build strength and endurance from the LSD runs

It took me almost 2 years to get to a point where running became more comfortable and enjoyable. Before that I had injury after injury, mostly due to doing too much too quickly.

What type of injuries if I may ask?

What Shaper said.... LSD Runs are important... You cant run comrades alone on just sprints. Those long hours on weekends help you to go fast....

100% right. and I owe this forum big time for finding this out relatively early on.

I've changed my mindset immediately. Just this morning I was sitting on the IDT hitting a lekker zone 2.

I'm looking forward to seeing what difference it makes

So there is a big Balls up at Loskop Marathon. We shouldn't have entered via Webtickets. The online entries only opened up today.

So I am waiting what Loskop Marathon will say that we must do.

The ones that kept me out for extended periods..Runners knee, itb and stress fracture due to shin splints,

Those are the typical over use injuries which I blame on Ultra distance fever.... I’ve been unable to run for an extended time due to injuries twice in my life.

Once when I entered Comrades and subsequently did to much to quickly and got ITB, and once again when I was training for ultra Triathlons and did to much training.... both times I could not fun for months.

Other than the ultra fever effect it’s also down to trying to follow your own training program instead of a professional coaching programme. In those days the inter web was not like it is now..... training programs were written / printed on paper and not freely available.....well that’s my excuse ???? anyway.
