You don't have to do an ultra! My second comrades I was injured for Arthur cresswell... So only did a qualifying Marathon and a solo training marathon...

You're probably 100% correct. Unfortunately I'm a runner, which means I'm going to ignore all sense, logic, reason and experience in favour of a panicked Comrades training season where I'm desperately trying to run all the kilometres without getting any of the injuries before finally realising that I've made all the same mistakes again.

Apparently runners never make the same mistake more than 5 times so I should be good by 2022.

Hi everyone,

I have a bit of a question for everyone here.

I have agreed, with a mate, that I will be running my first ever 21km at Robor in April. However, I have not been following a 21km running plan at all. with that being said, I definitely getting fitter and faster. My parkrun time has come down by about 8 minutes and can comfortably run at about 06:00/km to 06:20/km (I am not very quick, I am running for enjoyment and to just say I have completed a 21km). Furthermore, I feel like I have somewhat of distance in me, after completing a few 10km and 15km races.

With that being said, should I be worried about not following a structured plan for the race? Or will I be okay to 'finish' (am targeting a 2h30m) in April based on average fitness?

If you have already run "a few 10km and 15km races" Then i say you should be fine, especially as you are not aiming at breaking any records. Come race day take it slow and enjoy your first HM.

And then come give us a race report!!!

I agree, if you have completed a 15km you should be able to complete a 21km. Don't stress too much about the time. If your plan is just to finish a 21 then I would not stress too much about following a structured plan.

After you have finished your first half marathon you can re-assess and decide what your plan going forward is. Do you want to run a faster 21km or do you want to do a 32km, moving towards a marathon?

You know what pace you can run at... Run your run and push yourself a little more than usual. Tell your mates that and they might try do the same. Rather finish with a walk knowing you pushed yourself than finishing comfortably wondering if you could have broken 55 or 60.

My recommendation... Without interfering with your training schedule.. Try run one of your daily runs at 5:30 per km and see how you feel

I’ve been taking it a little easy this week to ensure I’m not overloaded come Sunday. So I did 3x 9 mins with 3x 1 min rest in between each. Plus the usual 5 min warm up and cool down. It was supposed to be 18 min intervals.

So I took you recommendation into account and tried to push the intervals a bit faster than normal... I did the 3x 9mins at 5:39, 5:11 and 5:20, resulting in a few PB’s too. Really felt good, even though I could feel I was outside my comfort zone at times.

Also +1 for the dry needles, on 2 ITB's and a rotator cuff injury... and each time responded well.

Yup, it also works wonders for my rotator cuff injury. And it is much less painful compared to her elbow![emoji2]

Good luck to all running Kosmos and Sarens this weekend. I have accidentally entered the Sarens 21km a while ago and completely forgot about it [emoji85] Luckily I received a reminder sms.

Thanks very much guys. I will be doing the Robor race in Benoni

Will finish and let the running Gods decide my fate afterwards

*Edit: I suppose adding a one or two casual runs during the week into the mix can't hurt?

How'd the guys go at Sarens?

Anyone else ride the Argust?

Must say, it's such a lekker race... glad it went off smoothly this year after the disasters of the last few years. And at least I can still call myself a cyclist for another year

Mrs and I traveled through to Secunda on friday night. I had a scratchy throat on friday and just felt rubbish on Sat morning so decided to sit this one out.

Wife said it was a really great run. Organisation at the start on the morning was good. Route was an easy rolling run through the burbs. Most of all she said the spectators and those helping at the tables were the best part.

Unfortunately she got struck by ITB (again  :cursing: ) 20km's into it. After the pain she suffered at Township marathon a few weeks back with the same issue she cut it short before it was too severe.

The drive back to joburg was a long look at whether either of us are even close to Comrades fitness and should call time on the idea for this year.

Is your wife seeing someone about her ITB? Comrades is very close, and she should probably see someone ASAP before she causes more damage.

I got myself a pair of the New Balance Lazrs. Terrible, terrible shoe. Ripped the back of my feet to shreds and was battling with numbness from the pressure of the tied laces being too concentrated on the top of the foot (even though lacing was not tight) on my first long run. Very disappointed after having no issues in my 1080s.
