Stretch Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 the s*** hit the fan for me big time at Karkloof, back to the drawing board again.Ran the first half and back to Mbona so comfortably, then on the long downhill to the road crossing my knee said "na F** you" and really started hurting bad, something not lekker going on there so I decided to call it and not risk further damage, in to the doc later. Little bit bleak because the first 110km was awesome hey, really was just on cruise control, turned at halfway in 10 hours, before the 50 miler start feeling ok, nutrition was bang on point, pace was good, spirits were ok and picked up pacer all for it to go south way too fast. Ya back to the drawing board,Sorry to hear that dude

Ya back to the drawing board, crap! Not quite the drawing board though, you ran 110km! It's sometimes a very tough decision to pull out, I wouldn't make up your mind on anything until you've had it checked out properly. Andrew Steer and dave303e 2
Chris_ Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Karkloof 50 milercouple things..1. We were vastly under-prepared for this race. 120kms training the 2 months prior and a cold is not great planning. 2. Its a long long way.3. There are some amazing runners out there. anyone stepping up to the line on Friday night for the 100 is a real boss. Truly inspirational. (congrats regardless Dave303e, you're a machine) First 30 km's was just stunning. Benvie, Mbona is the most beautiful scenery in the world. Sun was shining, it was perfect. 32 kms checkpoint in 4 hours I was having the time of my life. But pretty soon thereafter I could feel the lack of training. Tired legs, feet started hurting. Thats when the rain came. and rained. and rained. and then hailed. and rained some more. The roads and paths turned to clayish mud, and I slipped and slided through the next 50kms. Feet got really sore and I was reduced to a slow walk. (to be honest I reckon it was impossible for a newb to run up or down those slippery paths anyway) Took many breaks to just sit and take the pressure off my feet. Mentally I was faring surprisingly well, luckily it wasn't freezing cold and time wasn't an issue so I was happy just to take a slow walk into the the night and to the finish. Just over 16 hours I got into Howick. Pretty happy to be done. My Mrs took a wrong turn about 20kms in. Got stuck on a loop around a river section and did it 3 times before she manged to find the right way out! Added 10kms. She reached the 32km checkpoint having done over 40kms of running. Obviously it crushed her, AND she fell in the river crossing hurting her back and hip which added to the misery. She took the car home at the 46 km station. not quite cutoff by the time, but flirting with it. Just an all-round tough day out for her, shes super disappointed with the dnf. Will we be back for the 100 miler? Maybe not soon. But one day definitely. Training really needs to be addressed. I'm getting tired of half-arsing through these events and being dead broken on the floor at the end when they really should be special moments. Hacc, ScottCM, _David_ and 3 others 6
Jackes Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 The Suunto 9 I was using for the event... I had the route loaded and navigating on the 2nd screen just in case but the route was well marked so it was not needed but ya very impressed with the watch, time to start squirrelling away for one of my own haha Dave, I was under the impression that it does not have maps like the Garmin Fenix?
Shebeen Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Must say I am rather happy with my Suunto Spartan Trainer and value for money and functionality I really can't see much competing with it. The South Africa Extended Warranty is also a killer blow for other brands in the extended warranty is the following: 1 Complimentary USB Charging Cable over the 5-year period 5 Complimentary watch services at one per year 3 Complimentary Watch strap changes over the 5-year period 2 Complimentary HR belt strap changes over the 5-year period 5 Complimentary Battery replacements for HR Belt over the 5-year period Unlimited software updates. T&C’s apply Valid only in South Africa Valid for 5 years from date of proof of purchase I have been lent the new Suunto 9 for Karkloof this weekend, will let you know how it goes, they claim 120 hours of GPS lifetime in ultra mode with 25hours in performance mode so this will be a good test... plus one here. have got the spartan trainer wristhave had some issues connecting to phone to upload, but updating sw on the watch sorted it.didn't get a hr belt, have one from before but haven't worn it since getting the wrist based hr. i don't really look at it much so not concerned about too much accuracy.might actually just claim my first free strap, so when/if it goes i don't have to wait!
dave303e Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Dave, I was under the impression that it does not have maps like the Garmin Fenix? I don't know about base maps, but you can add a gpx or kml and navigate that path/route/track or to points with ease. CBlake- it is an epic run hey well dont of fighting through to the end, the conditions hgot rough sat afternoon, I was rather happy to be in a hot bath with multiple painkillers in my system when that weather rolled in.Sorry to hear about the Missus, I know of another runner who broke a foot as well, but ya the trail is not technical but it can catch you. Watched a few fall flat on their faces between 2 and 6am sat morning... The vibe was epic this year hey, perfect amount of people in my opinion, trails never clogged but enough for gees. Chris_ 1
Chris_ Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 In other news this was the first long run I've eaten actual foods. Sandwiches, muffins, Neat bars, Far bars, potatoes, Woolies mini packets of biscuits, it was great. Comrades was the last time I tried to fill up on gels. Half way through my stomach said no thanks I'm out, and I couldn't eat till 2 days later... dave303e and Andrew Steer 2

Comrades this year I ended up using a quarter of the gels I intended using and relied on foods at the water tables. Far bars work better than gels but only up to a point.

JuddMan Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Well done to all that took part in races this weekend! I had quite a lekker long weekend training and managed to run twice, so was very happy. This running bug has hit proper hard. My birthday is next month. I may or may not be ordering a newish GPS/HR watch (Garmin 235 comes to mind) and shall be getting a decent pair of shoes (currently between Asics GT-1000 and Brooks, cant remember the model) Andrew Steer and Hacc 2
gummibear Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Anyone know if you can qualify for Comrades on an Ironman marathon or must it be a separate marathon?
Chris_ Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 (edited) you can, you get an an additional 20 mins if I remember correctly per normal marathon seeding batch. EDIT: I'm not sure that made sense.. So normal marathon quali cutoff is 5 hours, ironman you can qualify with 5:20 Edited September 25, 2018 by CBlake Ronniek 1
