Ronniek Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 [quote name="Frosty" post="3442102" timestamp="1547553357"I had the route downloaded on my Garmin, and was showing a 2:00:24 - 2:00:32 finish for the first 11Km, which I was happy with. It all went a bit pear-shaped the minute I started walking, but not as bad as I thought it would be; Nothing wrong with walking during a race. I bettered my pb at Safari half last year with a well timed walk half way up a uphill.
SeaBee Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 With subs having opened... I have a friend (very good runner!) that missed out on Oceans entry and asked me if I can help looking for one. Anybody know of an entry that is up for grabs?
Frosty Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 Congrats on finishing your first 21km! 2:15 is not bad at all, especially for the weather conditions and the Dischem Route. The second half is very tough. I hate walking... The reason is that I get exponentially slower when I start walking. Like Andrew says, some people struggle to get going again. I am one of them. It is even worse when it is hot. I try to stick to a water point 30-second walking regime... but that easily goes out the window when it is hot and there are climbs. You should be proud of yourself, you finished a half marathon. Welcome to the club! We all have bad days, embrace them. Learn from your experience. You now know how to pace yourself better on your second 21. You will also be better prepared in terms of nutrition and hydration.Another lesson is to stick to your plan, do not try and change the plan on the day by joining a bus (unless you feel comfortable with the bus pace). I know it is difficult in the first half when the route is flat and your legs are still fresh. I made the same mistake a couple of years ago at Tough One... I joined the sub 3 bus and the bus driver was very inexperienced (I only realized this when I passed him a couple of kilometers from the finish, he was walking to the finish with his bus sign in his hand without the rest of the bus) I hope you are not discouraged by this. Enter another 21... This was my second half marathon for me. First one was Alberton 21 in November... a 1:58 or 1:59. Andrew Steer 1
Barry Stuart Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 I made the list! +1 for Altra Lone Peaks, best thing I've ever done for my toes (and Mortons neuroma), they're awesome. Just spoke to Gordon at Randburg Runner and he mentioned that Altras (and Mizunos) are landing at his store end of the month. Keen to go try them out as everyone who has used one becomes a devotee.
Chris_ Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 Just spoke to Gordon at Randburg Runner and he mentioned that Altras (and Mizunos) are landing at his store end of the month. Keen to go try them out as everyone who has used one becomes a devotee. Funny that, a few years ago he (or someone who appeared very knowledgeable there) said that Altra were a disaster to import, thanks to some very shady distributors or something along those lines. I'm glad to hear they've upped their game. We need a place to bring in decent stock. Troisport has one or two pairs, Drifters has a couple and thats about it. It made for a challenge to pick the right size when I asked someone to bring them across the pond for me. Barry Stuart 1
Barry Stuart Posted January 15, 2019 Posted January 15, 2019 I'll give you a heads up when they land. I'm going to bug him for a demo day like they had with the Hokas when those first arrived. They let people do a 4km run in them around the area to try them out. Chris_ and Hacc 2
b-rad Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Has anyone done Surrender Hill marathon to qualify? Any comments? The profile looks brutal. I haven't done the marathon before and this year most of my club mates are doing it. I am feeling the peer pressure now... I did Surrender hill last year. Not as a qualifier but rather as a training run. Took it easy till around 30km then picked it up from there. Passed plenty of spent runners towards the end. In a way it's similar to Arthur Creswell (Bergville to Ladysmith) in that the field is quite small there can be long stretches of running alone, which helps with mental strength I believe. It's a challenging route and I suspect not a good one to use as a qualifier. Certainly much quicker routes out there. Would definitely recommend it as a great weekend away and as a bit of a vasbyt training marathon. Hacc and Barry Stuart 2
Stretch Posted January 16, 2019 Posted January 16, 2019 Frosty.. As everyone has said.. Bad days happen.. You'll know a good bonk from cycling. It's happened to all of us... Don't let it intimidate you Andrew Steer, dave303e, Frosty and 1 other 4

I had a bad day, I didn’t enjoy it - but I was still happy(ish) with the time. I’ll still do more 21’s, but not now as I have the Maluti Double 90 to train for. Andrew Steer Posted January 17, 2019 Posted January 17, 2019 Anyone else struggling to get out in this heat? When I wanted to head out yesterday evening the real feel was 37... (cue Lexx and his 48 degree runs up North) and on top of that you're already feeling flat from a long day at the office in the heat.Went out early this morning instead, far more civilized - guess mornings are going to be the thing for the next few weeks Lexx, Chris_ and Hacc 3

Went out early this morning instead, far more civilized - guess mornings are going to be the thing for the next few weeksI have the privilege/misfortune of being a shift worker. In my three week cycle I run in the mornings for two weeks with one week being forced to run in the afternoons. If I had the option I would only run in the mornings. Apart from the cooler weather it just starts my day of much better. Also then it’s done, no matter what happens during the day your run is sorted. Andrew Steer 1

It feels like I can't breathe and I am not getting used to this heat. It affects my sleeping so I am struggling to get up in the mornings, I run at night but it is pure torture. When will this heatwave be over? It is been going on forever now. Andrew Steer 1

Went out early this morning instead, far more civilized - guess mornings are going to be the thing for the next few weeks I work 6am to 3pm, so mornings are not an option, my take on running in either the heat or a full blown thunderstorm for the last few weeks is that it is character building, acclimatization for that race day that has stupid heat.Adjust your pace and hydration and get it done.I started my 35km run at 2pm on sat in 30 degree heat, eased into it and actually enjoyed it a little although that may be the masochism talking Edited January 17, 2019 by dave303e Andrew Steer, Hacc and Ronniek 3
shaper Posted January 17, 2019 Posted January 17, 2019 Whilst most of my speed workout/tempo runs will be done in the early mornings, I do recovery and easy pace runs in the evening. Sundays I often run mid-morning so that I can get use to running in the heat. Andrew Steer 1

It might also have to do with me being a bit weak and unfit starting up my running again, but I'll get there... like you say, good acclimatization Lexx and Hacc 2
