Mats Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 i remember when @Carpet ran her first marathon ad she said she was not sure she would do another...how many is that now? 3 or 4?This was number 3The first was Vaal last year march. Stretch 1
tjommies3 Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 Ugly stuff, I'm actually really irritated with myself... I only was doing Jeppe as a step up in distance with the aim of being ready for a decent Vaal in 3 weeks time. So I actually was supposed to do an easy gentle 4:40/50 odd time, as I've done nothing longer than 21km this year. But low and behold, this poephol went through half way on a pretty tough course in 2:03... needless to say around 27km's odd I started to feel a bit of knee pain which was beginning to slow me down, and then at 30km's I had a double calf cramp explosion. Tried everything under the sun to try rid myself of them, but just could not, even walking was a painful struggle. Hobbled along until 37 odd kilometers (took me over an hour and a half these glorious 7kms), watched my wife and Carpet march off into the distance along with many a club mate. My calves just wouldn't cooperate. Sitting on the pavement at 37kays, fighting my latest sniper attack, some guy appeared offering up an Uber lifeline... and I took the bait. Struggling along for another hour plus, achieving little apart from possible further injury I would have to wear that DNF tag for the 3rd time in my life. Like I said, more irritated with myself than anything... such a stupid rookie mistake. And all I've got to show for it is a big fat DNF and some unwanted knee pain. Anyways, Pirates 21km helpers run this weekend, and hopefully some more regular running in the lead up to Vaal. As always, it looks like I am playing catch up Sorry about the experience. Speedy recovery Andrew. Andrew Steer 1
SeaBee Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 Andrew, sorry to hear and hope the knee heals up quickly. But you learn much more when things go pear-shaped. Likewise, I went out too fast (hindsight) at last year's Oceans. Fortunately ended up being a slower than hoped for time, not a DNF with niggles to boot. Won't make that mistake again! Andrew Steer 1
SwissVan Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 To be honest I haven't paid much attention to my HR and nausea. At the moment I am moving so slowly my HR does not go higher than 160-ish. I am mostly in Z2. I think part of the problem now is I have this horrible mental block. I slow down / start stressing when I see an uphill. I am going back to the specialist next week (new year and new MSA to spend). I tested positive for reflux with a barium swallow test. The weird thing is I don't have heartburn. The medication (PPI) is not helping. If anyone has experience with reflux and running, please feel free to share.160ish....Do you know your true running max HR or lactic threshold?
SwissVan Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 This was number 3The first was Vaal last year march.Wow, well done ????
Andrew Steer Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 Thanks for the support guys... like I said, more just my own stupidity. Lesson learnt... just need to make sure it's just a minor setback. Knees feeling better already after some good stretch sessions, Pirates should be a solid test. shaper, Stretch, Barry Stuart and 1 other 4

This is to assist with my acid reflux which should hopefully assist with my chronic sinus issues. The Lansoloc is really great as I have almost no nausea or acid reflux. It works for me. Hacc 1
Dirkitech Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 Does anyone use the Vibram Five Fingers for long distance road or trail running of 20km and more? I'd be appreciative of any experiences people can share.
Barry Stuart Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 (edited) For the Altra fans, the Escalante, Lone Peak and Superior have just arrived at the Randburg Runner in Linden. Those Superiors look damn racy for shorter trails! I'd be interested to try those Escalantes for road. Edited February 13, 2019 by Barry Stuart Chris_ 1

SeaBee Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 I tried toe socks as well, but I killed them. One muddy Bastille trailrun and that was the end of that. They were awesome while they lasted, though. Nice and warm as well... chose the wool option. Then, Altra Superior... awesome shoes - and I do love Altra shoes. But unless they changed it, be aware that the tread has a very limited life. The shoes keep working after that but wears down quite quick. But for a road training shoe, I absolutely loved my Altra. Used the Instincts at the time, but now those Escalante (not yet available at the time I bought) does look niiiice. Dirkitech 1
dave303e Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 Alfred Thorpe nearly completed a full Drakensberg Grand Traverse barefoot, not barefoot shoes, not plakkies but fully barefoot.... #toughaswoodpeckerlips Dirkitech 1
Dirkitech Posted February 13, 2019 Posted February 13, 2019 See below for better option.Sportsmans do not seem to stock Altra Two of my running mates run ultras with plakkies (no jokes)wha... but do they finish? I ran 5 and 10km distances barefoot a few years back in PE. It was fun, but sore and lots of sidestepping debris. I didn't know about Vibram or Merrel's equivalent back then, could less so even afford them. I like the appeal of near barefoot running but with protection from debris, even if I look like "that guy". Its just a huge price to pay in taking a chance
