With Miway, road bike R180 for 30 000 and race bike R280 for R50 000. I'm busy with a claim since my accident on Malmesbury road in the Derby dash Saturday that past cde group. Was well received, and miway requested to take my damaged bicycle (frame)to Chris Willemse Cycles for assessment cause they do the assessment down hear in Cape Town.

Chris Willemse Cycles response to Miway is to replace the carbon frame (damage to the left rear back stay of my swift attack)but according to Rachel Lewis (rep) and Martinus.... (manager) they have a better understanding with Procycles up in Johannesburg that can fix carbon frames therefore Miway will ship the bike free of charge for further assessment.

By now hands tied and completely out of the picture this exercise has taught me to expect the worse and nothing less from Miway. For my safety no matter the outcome I will stick to Oom Chris Willemse's assessment to replace the frame to avoid any further unseen medical cost and damages to other road users if failure should occur...hope my wife reads this

Ps there will be a newly repaired 2015 swiftcarbon frame available shortly! Not sure about warranty but claim no674753 will be tagged to frame

I had a claim for my bike in August and from the time I submit my claim until payment was 3 (three) days. No hassles.

and no, us brokers don't get preferential treatment.

Im with Outsurance, and my Monthly Premium is now R2990. But when i got a quote from Santam, they charged me R1490.( The same stuff thats with Outsurance insured as well)

So Outsurance is now stating that Santam is not going to payout the full amount of your bike Minus the Excess, there will always be extra charges that they dont tell you about etc etc. I know its their way of telling me not to move, but, any hubbers using Santam, and how are their claim processes? Is there any Hidden charges etc?

This is a huge difference. I know that outsurance is not cheap but neither is santam. I assume you deal with a broker? If not, get assistance to compare apples with apples.

Hi patch, you ask some very valid questions and as an independent broker myself, I would like to answer as follow.

First of all, Santam is also my first choice of Insurer and I am insured with them myself, although I can get myself cheaper insurance with the other companies I have contracts with.

The other companies are: Zurich, Hollard, AIG and Discovery Insure, M&F (only commercial) and then some AMU's like Mirabilis etc.

None of these companies are "bad", it is just that I know that Santam would rather look for a reason to settle a claim than to repudiate it. Also if there is a "grey" area on a claim, for instance you can't proof certain high value items during a burglary, they would always give the benefit of the doubt to the client. Of course each claim has its own merit.

Besides this, their systems and procedures are worldclass. The insurance industry is a very competitive market and as an independent broker my only edge in this market is quality personal service. I can't give that if I don't get that from the insurers. In this regard Santam is definitely ahead of the rest.

due to your connection with the FIA, you must be well aware of the fact that Santam takes the majority of the awards year after year although Hollard does make some huge inroads lately.

As was stated before by my colleagues, you will find that the majority of independent brokers have a contract with Santam and that Santam is their preferred choice of insurer. That must count for something.

I don't have a binder agreement, nor am I a tied agent with them. My opinion is based on 19 years of experience with various insurers, and administrators.

Whether I insure a client with Santam or Hollard or Zurich doesn't make any difference in my commission. It is regulated as I'm sure you are well aware off. There's no biases involved.

You are quite correct that we should advise the client according to his/ her individual needs. But comprehensive cover on a vehicle is comprehensive cover, whether it is with Santam, Hollard or Zurich. The only difference is in premium and excesses.

In my experience as a broker 95% of clients choose the cheapest option.

btw, what is your affiliation with FIA?

Lots of questions answered and cool stuff to chat on. I am on my phone though so will answer comprehensively (oh yes that happened) a bit later.

But in summary like you have said above, if you say Santam is the best comprehensive motor cover, that is a statement I can live with and based on your experience trust, in a nutshell your are actually fulfilling a broker function by saying that.

However, simply saying Santam is the best insurer before knowing what I want covered or on what terms, is a bit biased.

Santam has incredible systems, we are Santam IT partners and have spear headed many projects with them. First to launch their commercial auto rating engines, first to pilot their ICS and have been facilitating their Fusion data extracts for ages already. Ian Kirk also initiated a multibillion Rand IT drive to make the systems better for the brokers before he moved on, so it is understandable that brokers like it. Their automated claims system also helps certain mandated brokers with claims payments.

My statement however still stands, as a policy holder I would prefer for my broker to first hear my requirement before simply pointing me in Santam or any other underwriters direction.

FIA question, the 3 largest brokerages in the country are my clients and I often engage with the FIA on various broker initiatives, I also like drinking brandies with Justus ;)

so is it just my badluck or probably that Integrisure are absolute crap ?? It would be their duty to ensure the claim is settled fairly by Santam...

Had a house break-in last year, in a complex. Claim took 2 months to be settled.

Another claim now for equipment damage, claim open since 13 October and still not resolved after following up almost every day.

you're dealing with Integrisure who is an administrator. This means that they underwrite, settle claims and handle all amendments on the policy.

Yip im dealing with a broker. But after i phoned Outsurance and said i want to cancel my Policy, they brought my Premium down to almost what Santam is, only R500 difference. So i ask them why are they only now bringing my premium down, and seeing as it was R3000pm. They brought it down to R1900. So if i didn't tell them i am canceling, they would have never brought my Premium down. So bye bye Outsurance....

Exactly the same experience for me with OutSurance. I said I would leave them and it's two years later and still with them.

Three bikes on that policy and my latest bike with Cyclesure.

And my other questions?

Which brokerage are you with?

Do you have a binder with Santam?

Or are you a tied agent?

Making a blanket statement that Santam is the best insurer is not really what a broker is supposed to do? A broker is supposed to advise on the best product for a risk or persons set of criteria.

A broker is supposed to represent a client not the insurer. Your biase would make me question if you are giving me the best product for my requirements.

Else we can all just go to Santam direct, MiWay and not pay a broker fee or commission.

Whats with the interrogation?

I think in this particular thread we're clearly talking about bicycle insurance, and with that we can translate that to Household insurance. I don't see what's wrong about making a statement like that. Of course you need to do a needs analysis and provide different options and of course it comes down to affordability. If a santam premium is far out, chances are quite likely the client will go for another option. That won't change my view though.

I'm an independent broker. Like I mentioned earlier, I have/had contracts with all the companies I mentioned so I can't be a tied agent. There are a lot of good insurance companies out there. For me M&F are a top insurance company as are Hollard and Zurich, and I would recommend them to anyone but again if I had to pick one, it would be Santam. If that's wrong to say then quite frankly it's stupid but I just think you're nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking. This is forum. Lighten up a bit. Someone asked for an opinion on Santam and i gave it.

For the record, I'm not insured myself with Santam. My assets are with Discovery Insure. They're a very good company as well but from my dealings with them and have not been as pleasant as they have been with Santam. The only reason I'm with Discovery is because I'm literally paying nothing for my insurance. I score quite high on my driving and I have my wife on there as well and together we get refunded most of our premiums back.

Hi, apologies, please don't confise my bluntness as interrogation, not my intent.

If someone comes here and says "Hi, I sell bicycles and oh by the way Giants are the best bikes ever!" You just ask questions around that... :)

I/and everybody else who reads this thread would be interested to hear why Santam/ Household the best bicycle insurance? Whats your opinion on the specialist products on offer?

I have a good understanding with Outsurance. They don't fix they replace. If I am doing 60kmph and the fixed carbon frame brakes and I end up in hosilpital. Who am I going to hold responsible?

Outsurance because they fixed it rather than replacing.

I don't race on a repaired frame or wheels..

Be honest. At 4:45 am, before a long ride, you were sitting on the throne whilst typing this, weren't you...?

That is exactly what I was doing! It's like you know me! Because of this response I sent, I was late and set a KOM to make up time ;) this hurt later on in the 200km ride.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm pretty sure Momentum is going to have to start paying me commission for all the raving I do about them...

Last week I had a fall with the mountain bike, damaged wheels but everything else is fine.

I sent them the quote for the new wheelset today and within half an hour they accepted it and are paying out.

So painless to deal with them.
