Thanks For the Help Mr Paul O'Rourke. Saved me a lot of blisters

So in the cradle this morning I had a slow puncture. I stopped to bomb it at the traffic circle near Lion and Rhino, and told the wife to carry on. Long story short - there was a big bang where the tire sidewall gave up and after inspection and trying to fit a tube i realised the tire was knackered.

No way to fix this = Ride Over.

Call the wife. Who is ahead of me. After 4th missed call to her I realize her phone is in the car. And she is ahead. And tired as its the first ride after winter.

And I have the car keys.

What to do ? Only one thing for it - start walking and hope she turns around.

Somewhere near Kloofzicht I was passed by Paul who asked me what was wrong. I explained that short of a tire spare I wasn't riding anywhere. He asked where I was parked and I said Valverde. So I was looking at a long walk (or hoping the very tired wife would come back).

Anyway he rides off, and I walk on . IN Carbon MTB shoes, slowly chafing my heels and I can feel the blisters starting.

And then just before Kloofzicht i tried to ride again only to have the whole tyre and tube basically come adrift.

But just at that point a bakkie does a U turn. Mr o Rourke (who happens to be a hubber) has gone to Something Country, fetched his bakkie and come back to collect me and take me to Valverde.

So i am pretty grateful at this stage. i assume its on his route home. Turns out no it isn't and he went out of his way to drop us off.

We found my wife waiting at the top of the long hill near Kromdraai. She was too buggered to come back. So we loaded her up too and he drove us both to Valverde. Inside right to my car.

Thanks Sir - you renewed my faith in cyclists, hubbers and humanity. i plan on helping the next guy i see along the road in big trouble.

It brought to mind the other string about stopping during a ride to help guys with spares.

And you saved me some pretty nasty blisters....

Great story! Well done Mr O'Rourke, good to see that the saying that cyclists are good people with good hearts is really true. Karma is real and you will benefit in the future!

great stuff Mr O'Rourke!!!!! Thanks OP for sharing that story with us. It's always nice hearing success stories re. cycling, especially mtb cycling because of the remote and dangerous elements. However, pls pls pls, let this be a lesson to all of us, do not let the missus ride off alone, thinking we will catch up to her. mtb riding is more than often very isolated and anything can be lurking on our trails. Keep it safe out there. OP, i wish u didn't bugger up those carbon shoes too much hey.

Mr O'Rourke cost me a tube in the cradle this morning.

I counted 9 people fixing flats on the side of the road and, because of him, I asked every one if they were OK. All were, except for one lonely soul trying to call his SO to come and fetch him.

He had had his second puncture and was dumbfounded as he could find nothing in his tyre that could have caused the flat.

I gave him a tube and checked his rim-tape and tyre; both were fine. I then asked him if he had a bomb or a pump. He produced a miserable little mini pump which could not have pumped to anything above 4 Bar.

I promptly found where the snake had struck.

I wonder how many of the flats were pinch-flats having hit either the bumps or one of the cycle lane cat eyes?

Pomp julle Taaiers mense. Dit is belangrik.
