Cyclists attacked with sjambok

O yes in this country it is all about what i am entitled to.

As a cyclist myself, do you really think that a motorist should sit behind you on a narrow road, while you are going up a hill at 5 km/hour?

Don't you think you also have an obligation to use your head and contribute to your own safety, like let me wait at the double lane circle until it is safe to pass, instead of changing lanes in the middle of the circle in rush hour traffic because it is my right, or as a biker in rush hour traffic let me sit in your blind spot on the ben schoeman and pass you at 70 km/hour while the traffic is at near stand still, because yes you are right you have as much right as me to use the road but you also have as much right as i do, to use your brain.

Your rights wont help you much when you meet you maker, and i agree there will always be morons and drunk drivers, but this entitlement attitude of cyclist will only fuel the fire.

Yes a little but mainly no actually. Go to the Alps and see how motorists including luxury coach drivers negotiate twisty narrow roads most of which are way narrower than anything in SA that are full of cyclists on road bikes. Then come back and tell me cyclists have a culture of entitlement. Firstly, bikes don't go at 5km/h even up hills  - thats  walking pace. All a motorist has to do is be patient and pass when its safe to do so. A cyclist is simply another vehicle on the road.

The sheer stupidity of comments on this topic both here and on the online news porn sites is just mind blowing.

They do in France, and both while cycling and driving I found it works quite well.......

No. You are in any event legally allowed to be on the road; except:

On freeways, and

when there are dedicated cycle lanes...

Saw a nut-job cycling on Marine Drive on the road, right next to the darn (empty) cycle lanes.

you are only obliged to use the cycles lanes when they form part of the ROAD - the 'cycle lanes' next to Marine Drive are pavements with a line down the middle and is used by all non motorised transport and pedestrians.

Went to SBR this weekend to get away from cars, only to have to deal with MTB riders riding 4 abreast and blocking the TAR roads :P

Don't get me started on mtbers with their broom sticks for handle bars and riding 4 abreast. Ugh

I had a full on argument at a braai with my father in law when he started going on about cyclists having no right to be on the roads. It got heated. I am normally very easy going but the attitude towards cyclists is unwarranted in my opinion. I haven't been held up by cyclists riding abreast in years. I can't even remember the last time. The sense of entitlement is astonishing.

Hey  BG. Just go riding west and south of Joburg on Sundays and you will find plenty of dumb, crazy and selfish cyclists blocking the road.

This whole "debate" has gone South. Unfortunately we all have our heads too deep up our own hinies to even think. No wonder the roads are a mess. It's always "THAT OTHER GUY". jeez.

As far as I am aware it is law to use the cycle where there is one provided.

Maybe someone has the link to the traffic act.

We Are not in another country, its pointless comparing south Africa to the rest of the world. Like the insurance ad on tv, somthing about a unique insurance for a unique country.

So as mentioned I couldnt agree more with using ones head when on the road. Its nothing to ride 3 or 4 abreast but if the road is busy then some logic is required, so share the space and make it convenient for everyone.

Back to the topic at hand,

I hope that the navy are not just "saying" they will be dealing with it. I hope they do it publicly.

Like someone mentioned an example has to be made.

The problem is like Omar said "obliged"

Too little has been done to make it public knowldge that its law.

I emailed kfm one day as they always stating stay wider than the rider and asked if they could mention use of cycle lanes, but that hasnt happened.

In general the avg cyclist/commuter does not want to use the lane

Rules of the road for cyclists

Along with dedicated bicycle paths and lanes, cyclists may ride on any road open to cycling. This excludes freeways (like the M3, M5, N1 and N2 in and near Cape Town. Use cycle lanes wherever these exist. Remember that bicycles are regarded as vehicles and cyclists must obey certain laws in terms of the National Traffic Act 93 of 1996 and the National Road Traffic

I can see where the confusion comes in

Say what you like but my 780 bars are amazing. But that said yes the bicycle lanes around aukland park are too narrow. I'd clip pedestrians on the pavement. Riding between cars feels a little scarier. They not really designed for commuting. One day I'll get a commuting bicycle perhaps and then I won't have to watch out for people's side mirrors as much. But till then its a compromise I'm happy with my bike was build for singletrack it only occasionally sees tarmac.
