I always understood that it was his mother's pastries that he overdosed on in the off-season.

Remember every year there would be off season pics of him... sporting a little boepens at a nightclub. Then in the build up to the Tour panic stations would kick in and he'd be summoned to an emergency training camp in the black forests where he would shed some pie (and no doubt shoot up on clen or whatever was the order of the day). Then we'd analyse him at the Tour de Swiss/Dauphine as his boep would slowly reduce, day by day, but just never quite fast enough. It usually ended up with him at the Tour sick and sporting some cold sores as the Texan danced away on one of the steeper slopes.

That tour he rode for Bianchi was one of very few times he actually started in good shape, and boy did he give the Texan hell... he did still lose though, but we'll always have that TT into Gap to remind us what might of been

More talent I'm pretty sure, but less discipline, determination, fire etc...

They both definitely hit the ped's, but not everyone responds the same and Lance's schedule was the pinnacle in most peoples eyes.

Yeah that's probably true. I'm not sure if you've read Tyler Hamilton's book (i'm guessing many on this thread have) but his description of Jan Ullrich's physique borders on homo-erotic.

I was a big Ullrich fan. He got busted for drugs in the off season once, but not PEDs, ecstasy! I thought it was classic at the time. In an environment where every second rider was being bust for doping, Jan just wanted to party.

He did later on after retiring admit to doping... er "treatment"

Andrew, I am not sure Jan had more talent. Said it before, Lance may have been doped to the gills, but he also had tons and tons of talent.

He was also a great tactician.

I think if Jan and Lance were on the same training route, discipline and meds, Jan would have kicked LA ass.

All these things were available to all the riders at the time. Jan was just like many of us, like food too much...Liked leisure too much. It was his choice.

And he was hungry for it all. Dislike him as I do, he had drive. And balls. Okay, ball. Seriously, to stand uo and lie about stuff in public and get away with it for so long...

And even when he was bust, to get away with such impunity. And still be loved.

Lance is to cycling what Zuma is to...

Impossible to gauge really, but I reckon Jan with some of Lance's attributes (discipline/determination/focus) would have knocked Merckx out the park...

We know Lance's VO2max as an example was nothing all that spectacular - 84 if I recall?

Actually not a clue what Ullrichs was, but remember LeMond's figures were in the 90's

Only reason they dropped the Federal case against him back when was because it was an election year and the costs were too much. Had they not dropped the case he would be in jail now.

And if it wasn't that hey originally opened the Federal case, most of his team mates (esp Hincappie) would never have spilled the beans.

I reckon that's what endeared him to so many people too... #thepiestruggleisreal

He was also a gentlemen though
