NotSoBigBen Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 So as I roam the streets on my bicycle and at the very few road races I do I notice very very few riders using the drops on their road bike handlebars and wondered if this 'art' is being lost? Should road bikes perhaps come with flat bars as an option. In fact would it be safer for some not so confident riders then? Me personally I do use them when riding long sections into the wind on my own or when (on the few occasions I guess) I am 'pulling' at the front of a bunch ......
Prince Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 I think it might be a comfort thing. The guys are not used to the additional bending in the back so find it uncomfortable.
Baaisikilist Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Road bikes with flat bars...?!What next, cycling wife beaters and secret socks...?
NotSoBigBen Posted September 23, 2015 Author Posted September 23, 2015 Road bikes with flat bars...?!What next, cycling wife beaters and secret socks...? Camel'packs' and 'tubby'bags my friend!
Jay_B Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Correct bike set up plays a big part in being comfortable while riding down in the drops... saddle height/offset and/or stem length and stack height are out and you will not get comfy down in the drops.
Bomberman Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Camel'packs' and 'tubby'bags my friend!well dos it make me look stupid if Im doing a 90km ride with no place to get water,
Monark Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 mostly on single track... the cx bike feels more under control in the drops
shaper Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 I use them, mainly when into the wind and have been known to use them when climbing when have moved my position to the front of the saddle
Wannabe Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 I'm in the drops as often as I can. A lot more comfortable for me, even when just "cruisin"
Hennie VR Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Personally I feel it's only safe to ride in the drops when you are at the front of the bunch or if you ride alone. I don't feel comfortable/safe to ride in the drops when I'm sitting slip. Altough you can still reach the brake levers I don't think you have as much control over the steering and braking as you do with your hand on the hoods.
Bobbo_SA Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Haven't been on a road bike for many years, but was always more comfortable in the red area with my fingers down over the brake levers, failing that its in the drops.
alleyne Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 I use them when riding into the wind mainly or when I am taking a turn at the front of a group.
I FLY Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Road bikes with flat bars...?!What next, cycling wife beaters and secret socks...?Even more horrifying is that I have bar-ends on my flat bar road bike
CASSIE1975 Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 Changed my handlebars recently (to the ones I wanted) and since then have been using them as often as I can. Never used the drops before, as my handlebars had a TOO big drop to the "drops". Also mainly when alone in the wind...even on an uphill and sitting down...or in front helping to pull the group along...when in slip, will NOT use them - don't feel comfortable enough yet!
