Basic flexibility tests? They make you touch your toes. I know I can't do that with a 98cm inner leg measurement.

In the past assessment points were over and above exercise points. Now they are included in the 30k max. Which will take me about 4 months to achieve.

The assessment is targeted at the unfit and fat who won't get 30k points from workouts. Also hopefully giving the biokineticist a chance to sell them some unfat and fit workout stuff.

The reason everyone is "paying" for the Fitness Assessment is so they can get the free R2000 shoes from Sportsmans Warehouse.

You don't touch your toes, you have to lie on your back and try lift your leg past 90°.

And do a lower back rotational test, as well as a shoulder flexibility test

Not completely free though. You pay R375 for the fitness test and then you pay another R300 to activate the Shoe Booster. But still worth it IMO.

Tip: Rather go for the High Performance Fitness Test. Same price if you can prove that you qualify (ie. 94.7 in under 3:30 or 45km MTB Race in under 3:00). You'll get a way more useful test and earn bonus points.

Fitness assessment done.

They do some basic flexibility tests, and then a progressive test on a WattBike. Started off with an initial target of 55watts, and the target increments every minute or so until you reach reach a set HR target.

Easy-peasy! Luckily for most of us these tests are aimed at not inducing heart attacks in the severely unfit and overweight population!

I should score another full set of Vitality points

Do they manually adjust the resistance on the Watt bike every minute or so?

The reason I ask, is that the high performance test increased by 1W every 4 seconds until your cadence drops below 70rpm - was automatically adjusted, while doing a VO2max test at the same time.

Cos with the shoebooster, your net effective cost is zero if you meet all the goals.

but you will be sold the wrong shoes...

we are talking about the shop here that tells people 26" is for short people or kids and 29" is for adults

and you will be overpaying at least R 600 on a pair of shoes

but ja that's just me

If you have the SMW booster (whatever they call it) you get money back fir the purchase of the shoes, offsetting the R300. Also, the R300 shoe booster includes Club Vitaly membership (not Provincial Athletics license though)... a few more discount vouchers (largely useless?) included

Whaahhaaahhaa,

I must admit, I bought some tekkies for me and my wife last year and shopped around a bit also at running specific shops.

They were cheaper than everybody else and I also got some very good advice which was surprising. The lady which was assisting us were quite informed and definitely knows her tekkies.

The tekkies cost me R 4 500 for both pairs of which I've got 25% back. This was a couple of months before Disco's shoe booster

Assumption is the mother of all F&*KUPS!!... and is not quite true.

here is Joburg SW now have trained staff and video you on a treadmill...

whilst I know which shoes suit me and do over 800km in 6 months and go through at least 2 pairs a year, I recently let them do an analysis of my running style to see what they would come up with.  I am pronation and that is what they advised after recording.  Correct shoes were shown to me.

As I go through 2 pairs a year running getting 1 pair for free is a no brainer!!

So has anybody done the High Performance Fitness Assesment yet? I want to do it, just not sure if it is online yet?

If you meet the qualification criteria it is a no-brainer as it seems to be a much more thorough test for the highly active among us.

Agree with shaper. Plus by now I know what shoes I wear, so no assistance require other than "Do you have this in my number?"

Other than that - I love SWH for yellow ticket sales. Uninterrupted shopping!

I run in GT 2000 (2E)

last SW I visited (BFN & EL) did not have stock so the "trained" staff members tried to sell me a pair of Nimbus and some or other salomons as alternative (shoes at the other end of the spectrum)

but I "assume" then that the training has not yet reached all of the stores
