......Take more water than you think you need.  Can always sell it to the guys in Sutherland.  As you are aware, it gets quite hot and dry in that area.

Completed this morning.  Just need to pack the bags and then time to punish the body.

Des, those Jones bars are amazing;  I thought I saw you on the beach front the last time I was down from JHB sporting Jones!

I run the same set up but have found that the angle of the bar is most difficult to get right.  I started with ergo grips and that made the problem even worse since it always felt rotated too high of low in the stem.  Gone to long ESI's and much better.  One other comment is to make sure that the bars are above saddle height otherwise the concept doesnt work.  BTW they work really well on technical bits and long climbs as well;  and like you I have tried all sorts of bars and with Carpel my hands let me know quickly if they are happy or not....

See you one day for a tour of KZN Battlefields

and you did not even meet and greet?

I ride every day after work in that area until the traffic subsides.  On hot days it also has other benefits.

Next time.....

Hi,

Has anyone ridden Swaershoek Pass, in the direction away from Cradock? We are looking at 'slack-touring' from Cradock to PE in the spring.  Any input/advice on the Pass would be appreciated. I already understand that there is some significant climbing to be done. Ta.

I think I avoided that one on purpose/

Went Daggaboer way instead.

Does anyone have any idea where one can purchase extended bottle cages for carrying 1.5l bottles locally? CRC has them, but I don't want to go through the schlepp and frustration of the new courier company they are using.

Hijack*

PS anyone in need of a Rohloff...  I've finally come to the sad realization that I'm never going to complete my tourer build, so I can get rid of the rohloff.

It's done around 5000 km's, one owner and in an immaculate condition.  It's a red anodized disc type quick release mount with a new rotor (old one got bent in transit on an overseas trip).  PM if you're interested.

Hi All

Myself and a few friends are doing a 'slack-packing' tour to Vredefort Koepel from Vereeniging and back on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of June. We plan to sleep over in a self catering lodge so only cycling spares and kit is required to be packed.

Day 1 will be about 160 km with 70% gravel road.

Day 2 will be about 130 km with 60% gravel road.

We are fairly fit but will plan to utilize the full days to cycle.

Anyone keen to join are very welcome, as this would be a nice introduction to touring.

Cheers

My first bash at touring,... Heading to the UK at the end of the month to pedal from Canterbury to Edinburgh. Planning on doing it over seven days and drinking a few beers on the way...

Spent a grand total of 45 Pounds on a Optima Richmond Trekking bicycle off Facebook Market. Just hope its the right size!!

not sure if this is your route, but as far as i know there is a dedicated bike path connecting edinburg and london...  is this is what you're planning on riding, then my post is useless

Didn't know that! We're just planning on heading up the east coast. Will look into the bike path.

Found this thread and really liking it. Really need to do a trip. I have just gotten a gravel frame, though it is still with my cousin. Need to build it up. Earlier in the tread someone mentioned the Ivory route in Limpopo, may need to look into it. Been to the one in Mafefe when I still had a 4x4. Certainly doable by bike. My dad was involved with setting them up in the late 90s.
