Okay , just genuine honest opinions on these pedals , specifically the 3's . I am considering changing from Ritchey comps to these . Is it worthwhile ? Anybody out there using them ?

Awesome pedals just remember the float on these pedals is much more than other one's.Not much difference between the range only weight.

Easy to service.

I would prefer look as a better replacement. Had candies once and hated them. Getting out of them was hard for me at the time and the float made me feel unsecure.

The time pedals is also a good option.

Been riding with Eggbeaters for a long time and recently switched over to Candy's. Both excellent in my opinion and no issues at all.

Will probably never ride with Shimano's, but would definitely try some Look pedals if I ever switch again

Rode eggbeaters for years. Nothing better in thick mud. But there is a lot of float and they chew up the soles of the shoes a bit.

Then rode Candys for 2014 and 2015. Much nicer. The small platform gives your foot a more planted feeling.

Recently changed to XTR trail pedals and these are just so much better with my shimano shoes. Much more support and grip on the shoe...immediately gave me more confidence cornering and moving about on the bike in gnarly stuff. I can see why people might go for an even larger clip in platform like the Mallet.....or flats

I have been using crank brothers pedals since 2004. Only 1 issue: bent one of the beaterwires with a rock strike. Currently riding mallets and candies.

I have ridden them for years. I have had some issues with the Egg Beaters eating the bottom of your shoes - especially if they are carbon. You have to put on the guard plates.

I also bent a wire cage when I hit a rock - it was a big OTB incident and it would have bent any pedal.

I like the float and the easy clip in and out of them.

I have had Time before as well and they are also great pedals. Cant comment on Look.

Thing is I have  a number of bikes and to change to another pedal is a complete pain in the arse.

They are serviceable as well - so you can replace the bearings etc when they wear.

I have used look pedals and egg beaters and have gone back to egg beaters, I like the float, I like the easy of use in terms in clipping in and out (especially in mud), I have 2nd from top in the range and in 5 years have had them serviced twice and then they work like new.

I have the plate for the shoe and there is no wear and tear on the shoe.

Very comfortable pedals and easy to get used to.  I have however found that the following two issues detract from a otherwise fine pedal -

  • Brass cleats; wear quicker that normal cleats and replacing them at R400 a pop is a tad expensive;
  • Wire cage bends when it is hits rocks.

That being said; spares are readily available and its quite easy to service them yourselves.

If you ride close to someone on a MTB race and they have a noisy pedal.......9 out of 10 times it will be egg beaters/candies.

They are good. Rode with them for years. Easily serviceable and parts are available but they have plenty of float. Moved over to Shimano XT and I'm very happy.

I've been using egg beaters, candys and mallets for years, no issues, easy clip-in in mud and sand, they just need more maintenance than other pedals, but for someone that does all their own bike maintenance, that's no problem.

Thanks for all the replies , would you say that they are " noisy " pedals ? I have been getting a squeak from my Ritchey comp pedal/cleat , I think its coming from the pedal touching the sole at the back of the cleat , well thats the only visible contact point I can see .

I ride the Shimano XT's and have been using Shimano for years with no issues.

Always giggle at the egg-beater and other types discussing which ones are easier to service, where to get the servicing and parts cheaper etc. I have a 15 year old pair of Shimano Deore's on my commuter, ridden 3 times a week, smashed into rocks etc etc and they just fine.

It kind of reminds me of Land Rover drivers discussing how easy it is to service them, how easy it is to replace the clutch or to change cylinder heads etc, when the Land Cruiser guy next to them doesn't know what they talking about because he has never opened the bonnet.
