Your head - your choice.

Its also nice to ride standing with your head out of the sunroof of your car - and have your kids standing between the seats. And ride your motorbike in T shirt and shorts on a warm day. Or drive without a seatbelt.

Nobody debates this really. They are all very nice things to do and also very liberating

What are you trying to say?

Are you asserting your right to make a choice?

Or are you questioning the evidence for the benefit of helmets?

Asking a question if other also agree and to get a feeling of the lay of the land. So many people wear a helmet because they have been told to do so.

Re right to make a choice, you always have a choice, even if it against the law and 99% of commuters make this choice.

Re the benefits of wearing a helmet, this is a moot point as the evidence can be lead from both sides and has been covered ad nauseum on other threads.

I subscribe to the placebo effect and that it will help prevent minor scrapes and scratches if you fall, but that is just me. I am not saying you should not wear one and accept your views of having to wear a helmet (remember I indicated that I would wear a helmet when riding with others as a courtesy to them)

These debates are always the same - we all have an "i did so and so" story.

Helmets are safer than no helmet - that cannot be disputed.

I do think everyone has got helmet bedonnered though. Nobody bats an eyelid if you buy a piece of sh!t car versus a trillion star ncap rated volvo. The danger of a "cheap" car is way more serious than no helmet (in my own opinion).

Nobody I know wears eye protection when they weed eat, mow or grind (ok some do during grinding). These can all lead to eye loss but nobody seems to consider it. Having said that I fully expect thehub massif to all wear every item of safety kit every time they leave the house - hell most of thehub massif will tell you they wear their motox helmet in the car if they think it'll "win" a hub debate.

The helmet issue is a little like racism - we all react before we think.

Life is so sterile - sometimes you gotta just jump on your bike with a tee shirt and plakkies to remember what life was like before we wrapped everything in political correctness and peer judgement.

Anyway, as I said I was not looking for an impassioned plea, anecdotal evidence based comment or castigation.

Just wanting to know who felt the same. As I said it is not Friday yet.

I feel that way - I don't train with a helmet, just a big sweat band around my big bald head! For a start it's bloody 38C in the shade here.. it's your life, you get to decide

Question is what will the helmet help? It is only designed to assist with falls from about 1.5m at no forward speed.

Make sure your life insurance will pay out if you are breaking the law and are caught out when not wearing a helmet...... then ask your wife/family if that's ok.

I'm not entirely sure what you realistically expected from this thread guy.

With the number of posts you have I'd assume you're a regular around these parts (dangerous assumption I know).

If that's the case, surely you've seen or even participated in any one of several of identical threads? If not, spoiler alert - it always ends the same. Do what you want, just don't make your problems someone else's problem if the worst happens.

If you're really interested, do a quick search and go through those threads. You'll get all the feedback (or confirmation is that's what you're looking for) you could possibly hope for.

I assume you have never tried riding a trail without a pip-lid, as all the trails around Cape Town are all in one mind regarding the supposed offending piece of coif protection.

"no helmet? No ride!"

'nuff said. Your honour, the defense rests.

Put it this way Dick, would you allow your kids to ride their bikes in the street without a helmet?

Don't be the dick without a helmet!

it should'nt be a placebo effect , i put my helmet on and forget about it it's become more of a custom to me than brushing my teeth , but it comes down to people that are effected by you not wearing a helmet and not what you feel about it i.e. family ect.

but still your life so ride the way you like ....as long as you ride
