Cycling events for the rich only?

So I was thinking of doing my first ever cycling event. the 45 km Tour Durban. Click on enter, fill out the 500 pages of required information and get to the pay part and notice it is credit card only. This made me wonder.

I highly doubt that everybody who cycles has a credit card. Is this a subtle way of excluding people who do not have the means to qualify for a CC from cycling events? and if it isn't, how on earth would one go about entering an event without a credit card?

Yes it is. It's the same way we keep you armgatte out of university and schools and shopping centres and car showrooms and and and... it's a conspiracy. How do you even have money for a computer?

On a more serious note - how do you propose to pay when you enter online? An iou to be redeemed at registration?

I see Meezo mentioned EFT...

Unfortunately life in general seems to be driven by credit cards nowadays, they are almost universally used as preferred payment method. The division line between debit and credit cards seems to be getting consistently eroded as well, so I'm sure, in the not too distant future, there will only be 1 type of card in use for payments. In the meantime, try phoning the event organisers and enter that way.

Whatever method you use for payment surely does not indicate personal wealth? The question is rather what does events cost nowadays and is that affordable?

I see it as a Friday thread, but not really using a match to start a fire...

Consider actually getting a credit card... (Use it for all online payments and reap the benefits paid for by those who have to pay interest on their stuff. )

Like all tools, in the wrong hands they can be dangerous, They are most definitely not reserved for the rich!

I entered with a CC, was more just curious about alternate payment methods. Nowhere during the registration process is EFT mentioned as an alternative, actually at one point it states in bold that only CC is accepted for registration.

Just found it weird is all, Also, with regards to payment at registration, why ever not. all riders need to go to the registration desk anyway, so why not offer the option of a cash payment system at registration.Especially for the shorter "fun ride" side of these events.
