Wow I missed the 30T up front. Yeah 30T 42 does seem like madness. I'm running a 30T in front because I'm on a 11-34 cassette and it feels just right (okay I do spin out sometimes but it a price I'm willing to pay). My 34 was a little too hectic. Maybe if I get a bit fitter again.

fkoff.

1x11. 30t up front. Hater.

I don't disagree. I have definitely decided to go to a 32 or 34 up front.

However, the size whether it's 30, 32 or 34 upfront shouldn't change my original query which was about the shifting... Or does it?

Maybe if you just put a normal 11-36 at the back....(don't know if you answered the 16t insert questions asked multiple times above...)

Yup, starting to think that is the way to go.

Pretty much, yes

you also said you've taken this issue back to the bike shop a few times. I take it they checked a few things, viz correction gear shift cable tension, bent hanger/ rear mech alignment ?

Yup, replaced the 15 and 17 with the 16!

Ive noticed that when the clutch on the derailleur is on it makes upshifts much harder as opposed to the clutch being off. Have you tried it this way?

When I service my bike I also setup my gears with the clutch on as I find the gears are also "sticky." Setup with the clutch off makes shifting easy until i switch the clutch on.

Also, is your cable tensioned enough? The B screw adjustments will only makit or break it when shifting into the 42.

As for the 30t upfront... DUDE!!!! MAAK N PLAN!

I have 34 T upfront, 16 tooth and 40 expander. It shifts OK, but I think not as good as it was when the original cassette was 36-11. My RD is plain SRAM X7.

If I had problems shifting up or down, first thing I would do is replace the rear gear cable and outer sleeve. I think it should be slightly harder to shift up than to shift down. So you may just press a little more on the lever for the upshift, downshift you cannot press more on the lever.

You may need to eliminate a problem with the shifter and RD itself. If you can find a mate with Shimano 10 speed RD, perhaps you could borrow parts for a test. You could do this test for the price of two cables, since presumably when you put the original RD's back on you would have to use new cables.

30T up front and 40T at the back.

How old was the cassette before you modified it?

How old is the rear derailleur?

How old is the shifter?

Is the B-tension screw dialed all the way in?

Down shifting is problematic but upshifting is fine (going to smaller sprocket) so it not a sticking cable.

are you sure that the cable is routed correctly over its cam into the retaining slot under the retaining clamp in the rear derailleur?

Sounds like a cable tension issue to me. Just weird that the LBS couldn't sort it out...

Maybe try unclamping the cable where it meets the RD, pull it really tight and tighten the bolt.

I've found on mine it's very sensitive to having the b-tension dialed in absolutely perfectly. Just out enough to be able to get onto the 40 or 42 at the back but not too far out as then it struggles with some gears. I run 1x10 on two different bikes and can also say that on the bike with a stock 11-36 cassette it is much less finicky and easier to get dialed in than on the 11-40 minus 15 and 17 plus 16 cassette. So much so I will also make the second bike 11-36 again when I need to replace the cassette eventually.

I also went from 3x to1x and experienced the same shifting problems. In the end my problem was resolved by getting a new 116 link 10 speed chain on my setup. Maybe post some pics of your setup (rd, chain, tension screw etc)

Long cage rd def the best for 11-42. As well as mentioned earlier with clutch off. I run a 34 oval front and it just looks weird seeing my rd move like jagger the whole time when the clutch is on.

Oh. One last thing. What expander kit are you running. I used a kaldo kit and I tried their shimano 42 with a sram cassette and it was a disaster. Guess They say shimano for shimano and sram for sram for a reason when you buy a kit.
