Thanks Brett and André.

Yes unfortunately all true. More facts:

  • Happened at around 05.45 am on the Railway Bridge at PhisanteKraal. - See my Strava map below

  • Pepper Spray was used by Gerard Genis - and it does work
  • I used my bike as a weapon. It's pitch dark, and you need something between yourself and a knife-wielding assailant
  • Jan Ellis also used his Mountain Bike as a weapon
  • Fred shined his bike light into their eyes and it blinded them
  • No injuries, apart from Gavin who was pulled off his bike, who's got a hurt shoulder - luckily no blood. Just very traumatic, and Shanna - the only girl in our group this morning - cried with shock
  • Gerard Genis has reported the incident to Kraaifontein Police (apparently they can't open a case)
  • Tygerburger Newspaper called to have the incident details and get it published
  • Pedal Power Association has reported the attack on their facebook page
  • Yes. We will be changing our Morning Route

One of the reasons why i've started riding on the road less and less... it's so sad. Can't even enjoy my passion anymore without having to be "armed" to the bone... no more zoning out and just enjoying the ride anymore either...

Sigh.

Glad the dudes are ok ...

Uhh.... and go on the mountain around UCT and the 4 rapes there?

Checked out the other riders strava, some massive heart rate jumps! Amazing to see the body react!

What happened on the kromme rhee and when? Im moving to nooitgedacht soon..........

There has been quite a few indicents on that kromme rhee road as well as the r44 and r304 leading into and out of stellenbosch, and not just recently, but at least for five years.

There's even been a private investigation into where all the bikes go and someone did great PI work and traced it to houses in cloetesville I think. I also think there was a thread about it, but will never be able to find it.

Sadly that too...

The rapist was caught and is currently in jail, awaiting trial.

However, since his arrest, there has been 1 bike jacking on Plum Pudding hill above  Rhodes Memorial, during which a cyclist was stabbed twice in the neck. He survived but reported the m.o. as follows: Was riding with someone, stopped to let air out of his tyres, fell behind but not very far. Saw single well dressed hiker type with small backpack walking on the jeep track. Nothing suspicious looking about him. When he passed at fair speed on the downhill, the guy lunged at his handlebar at the last moment, causing him to fall hard. Before he could even get up the attacker was already on top of him and stabbing frantically with a knife. No threats, no demands, just a violent attack. Then grabbed the bike and fled, leaving the victim bruised, battered and bleeding.  :cursing:

So, yes, NOWHERE is safe.

Personally, I think it is time for.45 ACP pepper spray!

Edit: Not advocating violence, just gently, peacefully and lovingly, to show the $*&^%$#@&* bad guys the error of their ways, by making little.45 holes in them to allow the pepper spray easier entry! :cursing:

OK, edit for bad  language, sorry mods! Don't spray me!  ;)

Open their bloody mouths and empty the pepper spray, hopefully their body with go into full shock.  Then fall on their kneecaps per accident so they can never walk again. Lastly step on their family jewels per accident so they can not procreate again.
