Seriuos Component Failure

It would be easy to do the same with the 2nd chain, but then there is a chance that I could destroy a good workable chain.

I could take the rust out of the equation by only soaking it in the same solution and not leave it outside for a week before soaking it. Then cycle for the same distance and see.

Rather not risk it, but if you could, measure the wear on the chain, I'm curious to see how they compare. Theoretically if there was hardening during use or it came out of the factory too hard it would show less wear. If that would even be measurable with normal measuring equipment I don't know, probably not, but it's still worth a shot.

I have measured it with Parktool, Still good.  Also removed a pin, no rust inside.

When I removed the surface rust, I only soaked the chain for about 5 min in degreaser/Q rust-off solution.

Not convinced that the surface rust or soaking the chain for 5 min in the solution could have caused the cracks. It could have already been there.  I do not check the chain in that detail every time I clean it.

Not sure, good question.  I had this wheels from new. Never ridden on rim.  Will check front rim if it is the same.  Currently looking for rim to rebuild.  I can get Alexrim.  Not sure how good they are.

Agree with An3, someone has ridden on this rim, and not just for a few minutes.

Yes, I have ridden the the rim for hours and hours, but with a inflated tire.  I am the only person using the bike, so I should know.   I did not post the pic to claim or blame supplier, just sharing my experience. AMC great rims

Very interesting SURFER

Thanks for bringing this to our attention... who would have thought that cleaning or rust removal products would be strong enough to damage the links like that.

:whistling: Adds fuel to the minimal maintenance for chains in the how often do u remove and clean your chain debate we had a few weeks ago :whistling:

IIRC  the Q rust remover is acid based (some of them are not sure about the one OP used). So if you apply this, it will get into the spaces between plates and pins and eat away...

It looks like there is rust around the pins on that chain. This would mean lack of lubrication where the chain needs it most. Over time this will cause repeated heating and cooling of the chain which can harden the links and make them brittle. My guess is that this is what happened here.

If I were to hazard a guess it seems likely that you regularly degrease the chain in a solvent of some description. There is at least on other thread that has discussed that at length. Take a look there for some tips on chain care.

Step aside Bill Nye The Science Guy! Good application of observation and logic

How does it compare to your other chain with more or less the same use?
