Good article,

it only takes a few guys to get us tarred with the same brush. From my opinion, there is just no common courtesy. If your behind Handlebars or a steering wheel... it's all about me me me .. I just wish could all get along,

I don't  think this is limited to cyclists

Get into any sort of delay situation and there are people that believe they shoudl not have to wait like all others.

Think - Bank queue , road works , bar counter , traffic jam on highway , broken robots , staff canteen , restaurant buffet , dog walkers as intolerant in scrambling up the jump lines  ;-)

In fact go be a spectator at a school drop off zone and see the rage ;-)

We would all do well to slow down and practice "Don't being a Dick ! " in all areas of life

It's not Friday yet, but...

Pelotons scare the crap out of me. It seems the entitlement goes up a notch. Three incidents:

  • My first road bike race was last year's 94.7. Started so far back it was a TT race. Then did the Emperor's Classic - was racing in a peloton. Interesting - some real choice words being flung around at fellow cyclists in the same group, motorists (although I joined in on that), and slower riders that started in front of us, but we were passing at speed.
  • Was commuting up Botha on my little 26er commuter. A group of 5 riders came flying past me, so close I had to swerve to get out of their way. No greeting from any one, no warning from the leading guy that he is actually overtaking me.
  • Still commuting on Botha on another day. A large peloton of about 20-30 riders came at me on the wrong side of the road. I pulled of the left side as far as I dared to go (punctures ain't fun), and only the front omie was actually looking where he was going, and warned the following guys. Quite a few close brushes, with a few choice expletives from the swerving riders.

Roadies in pelotons are scary. MTBers are normally cycling alone, and will go around. I frequently find commuters on my way home, and that looks like two gentlemen at a door ("You first". "No, please, you first"), so badly do we try to get out of each others' way.

It is all about law enforcement.  Have a well written law being clear on the do's and don't are.  Have well trained law enforcement officers and it wil be amasing how people quickly develop the right attitude and keep their self entitlement well ... to themselves.

Typically you should have a police officer there at the roadworks in Fishhoek who fine the cyclist for riding on the pavement, fine the pedestrian for jaywalking, fine the motorist for endangering the cyclists life, etc, etc.  Very soon everybody using that road will know that if you do not want bollie on your way to the beach .. behave yourself.

Mostly everybody know the difference between right or wrong but our attitude gets formed by the tools that we use to apply right or wrong.

Jip, I still maintain there is an invisible micro switch build into the chamois of our cycling pants, somehow connected to our helmets.

No matter who, or what the cyclist is (Dr, Prof, Lawyer, Office Worker, etc) the moment the bum hits the saddle, the micro switch is activated, it sends a message to the helmet, which in turns sends a message to the brain, switching the brain off.

YES, WE BECOME ARROGANT AND AGGRESSIVE DORKS ON OUR BIKES...

Same as when we post online. I'm even more convinced that as soon as we get on our bikes / in our cars / behind keyboards / after a few beers, our REAL personas come out in all their glory. If you're a dick when posting online, guess what? You're a dick in real life, too...

I agree, kalk bay main road is where many cyclists like to give us all a *** name.

Although I do actually often ride on the pavement from kalk bay to muizenberg as there are 3 pedestrian routes in some sections.

This area in question is quite tight, just in front of the bible college. You can ride a bike there, but not without getting in the way of pedestrians so take restraint. I've actually seen two scooters block up the pavement there before. two okies thought it was a good idea until the one fell in a ditch and took up the entire route (had to walk in a trench to get past)

What about joggers that run done the middle of the road all entitled 4 a breast? People on horses that veer into the road randomly.

I have taken that exact route in the article on my road bike, because if you wait at the road works, some **** in a GL65 trys to overtake you in the road works to try get to yoga in Muizenberg quicker.

It just comes down to not being a knob, be lekker.

*The other day there was a burst water main on that road and they closed the road so only cyclists were allowed and runners. Everyone got on well and it was lekker. Cars are the problem on the road :P

Uhm no. Knobs are the problem on the road, no matter what their preferred method of locomotion.
