Educate me please! Road cycling, what are the rules?

I don't think he opened his inning with the intention to make friends.  As V12 mentioned, he is just here to troll.  Won't be here for too long.

The reallity is however, that is the reasoning of a fairly large portion of SA motorists.  Where this reasoning comes from is beyond me but is the perception.  Truly worrying but that is why so many people die on SA roads, because SA road users have each their won little fantasy road law books.

Do we as cyclists have to do written and practical tests to ensure we are competant road users?

Do we as cyclists display visible licence disks on our bicycles to allow us to be identified and held accountable?

Do we pay licencing fees for our bicycles to help contribute to the management and upkeep of our roads?

No, we can't say we are equal to cars on the road, why should we have equal rights if we aren't tested to see if we are competant, are nameless and hard to be held accountable for our actions and don't contribute...

My 2c...

Make that 0.2 c...

Do we as cyclists have to do written and practical tests to ensure we are competent road users? I've had a driver's licence for nearly thirty years, so, no.

Do we as cyclists display visible licence disks on our bicycles to allow us to be identified and held accountable? Accountable for what? Ramming into that speeding Fortuner with my roadbike and killing the driver and his whole family in fell fell swoop?

Do we pay licensing fees for our bicycles to help contribute to the management and upkeep of our roads? I already pay license fees for two cars, so I have earned the right to 'damage' the roads on my 7.5 kg bicycle, IMHO.

The law sees you the same as any other vehicle - yes!!

(You are a legal entity)

(Go to gov. web site find national road act of 96......)

There are a few extra laws that pertain to cyclists but thats like helmets and bells and highways In the Cape there are some extra by-laws that apply to motorists like the 1m gap they have to leave to pass but they may also put their wheel over the solid line to do so when safe.

You may not ride on the left of a yellow line (in service lane) - you may use the whole driving lane. Discussion for tomorrow.

Pedestrians have right of way - always (but may not jay-walk)

Animal-drawn vehicles always have priority.

The idea though is to STAY SAFE !!

(I've also had a couple of groot omies get out of their cars - eisch)

(should I put a flame suite on ??)

In the old days, you use to put your arm out to indicate that you you wamt to change lanes,...seemed to work, dont know if it still applies today...

My 2c...

you seem to forget that many of us cyclist also drive motor vehicles...and some like myself has an A and an EC license...a fork lift license and even a skippers license...so if i could i would be entitled to ride my bicycle on water... i would classify myself as competent to ride on the road.

i have a number board on the front of my bicycle which is registered with roag...so you can identify and hold me accountable.

I pay license fees for 2  trailers and 3 motor vehicle and toll fees daily.

not forgetting rates and taxes...fuel levies...and the other million and one things...not sure what you mean by not contributing.

i should have waited for friday to respond to this ;)

It's all academic really. I wonder how many cars will be around in 20 years, with the rising costs of fossil fuels? Or whether we'll be tootling around in Google-Drive vehicles? Or whether the simple crush of numbers, with the population doubling every 40 years, will preclude anything like personal transport. Besides bicycles, of course.

Still works like a charm here in Germany ;)

Pedestrians are supposed to merely cross the roads, and came along way before roads and cars and bikes so we can leave them be, before roads etc came along they could walk where they wanted fine

my next 2c is that I obviously struck a nerve with all the entitled road bikers...

no I think you struck a nerve with logical sensible people who know the law.

Deeckheads on the other hand are all firmly on your side...
