I did a few trailruns with Genuine Speedcross. Worst trailrun shoe ever. In fact I had XT wings, S-Lab and XT hawke. With all my feet hurt like hell afterwards.

Personally I think Salomon shoes in general are overpriced and in general below average on performance

Switched to new balance trail shoes (also my road shoes) and never looked back

And yet Ryan Sands won quite a few short distance races in Salomons ....

He is a sponsored athlete. I'd run in pink Hello Kitty slippers if I were paid to.

Never run in them before but that comment is spot on. Sponsored athletes will use whatever they are paid to use.

Yes and no,

He is also the athlete who stopped using a long time sponsors product cos it wasn't working for him anymore, so I don't think he'll use inferior quality products....

Nothing's sacred these days. Fake teeth, fake boobs, fake tan, fake faces and now...fake Salomons.

I have no issue with fake boobs, they still taste the same

But given how much emphasis we all put on the importance of good shoes (why else would you pay R2k+ for them?) this has to mean they work or he would be permanently injured. The only alternative conclusion is that shoes actually make no difference and we're all wasting our money (highly likely to be true I guess).

Even if they are identical to Salomon's (could even come from the same factory for all I know), I would not buy the copies/fakes on principle. I am on my 2nd pair of Salomon's now (neither were Speedcross as the size of the tread never made sense to me). I had an issue with my first pair and Salomon swapped them out straight away which was very unexpected from a shoe supplier, but got them a loyal supporter.

This Spanish guy, who has more knowledge on trail shoes and equipment than the Hub combined, reviewed the counterfeit (or false by Google Translate's terms) shoes:

https://translate.google.co.za/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://www.trailrunningreview.com/es/Salomon-Originales-vs-Falsas/a/126.html&prev=search

Key points:

  • Excessive wear and tear on the fake shoes within the first 200km
  • Poor shock absorption, especially for heel strikers (relating to my point on LT Muscle technology @TheJ)
  • "Quicklace"-clip losing grip - have to keep the foot secure by tying a knot in the quicklaces!
  • Waterproof at first due to a after-coating, which quickly deteriorates with increasing km's
  • After 200km the reviewer reported the shoe as "running torture" (whereas the genuine ones were still good)

But the best part was the concluding remark:

  Quote

While you can run with them, just as we can run with flip-flops or high heels they are not the most functional of the world. We assume that anyone with half a brain will invest a penny in a (good shoes) if what you want is running with it. There will be those who buy them for aesthetic reasons and not to run in, but to these people I invite you to reflect the effort they (Salomon) put in designing products, materials research and (compare) these models on the market before buying an imitation.

Yes, but he can also get a new pair every 100km. Problem I have with Salomon is that they do not last very long. Maybe I had fakes, but I won't spent my money on trails shoes made for running to the mall again.

If you read on the sides of the Speedcross, it says M&S. as far as I know it means mud and snow, and that the shoe is meant for European conditions running in mud and snow "A light, fast, and aggressive trail running shoe with GORE-TEX® for racing or high speed training in wet or cold conditions."

So yes, I only wear them in the winter, too hot for summer
