It will make you stronger if it doesn't blow you into to traffic or off a bridge.... !!! This wind is crazy, had to push my bike up a bridge for the first time in years with this Gale Force!! It's relentless and just won't give us a break!

The wind in the afternoon is worse though...

Riding along Main Road Woodstock is "interesting"! When you pass a side street (wind tunnel) you suddenly get side swiped and change lanes involuntarily.

Main Road Southern Suburbs, against the wind, is a bit like riding in thick sand and uphill at the same time!

But at least the wind keeps it cool. When it stops blowing, it starts boiling.

Luckily for me, it is only 800m from home to open roads with wide yellow shoulders.

Only thing we must worry about these days are the bikejackers.

Snip...

on a side note: looking forward to our SA trip, I've worked out a nice route, and booked some great accomodation (JNB - Nelspruit - 2 nights Graskop - 2 nights Kruger - 1 night in Swaziland Hlane - 2 nights St Lucia - 2 nights Durban - 2 nights Underberg - 3 nights Bergville - 1 night JNB) ek kan ni wag ni!  ^_^

That looks a great itinerary. Don't forget the malaria tablets! Don't see Cape Town listed, need to point out that's where the Cycle Tour is.   :)

In Cape Town?! What?!  :w00t: haha I know, we spend 5 days in CPT and fly to JBurg the day after the CTCTto start our road trip. We did the garden route and route 62 in 2015  ^_^

I don't plan on taking malariapills, I took them some years ago when I went to Mali and Burkina and those pills (Lariam) make me really dizzy and weird. A doctor once told me that even pills don't protect you 100% and if you do catch malaria, they can't give you anything stronger then those pills anymore. So, we'll be covering ourselves in a lot of repellent with DEET. And I think only those 3 days in Kruger are malaria area, no? Or Drakensbergen too?

What is everyone doing the week before the tour this year?

We did the TOGH which was awesome but at R5k thinking a tour with mates around some of the awesome WP passes could be a better way to spend the leave and money.

Thoughts?

um doing the nissan trailseeker legends in gauteng

If you react badly to Larium (it is notorious for giving some people all manners of psychological side effects), there are other drugs you can take that are unrelated and will not cause the same side effects. Whatever you do, please take prophylaxis.  You only need it for Kruger and Northen Kwazulu Natal, not the Drakensberg. Oh, and DO use insect repellent, long sleeves,  long pants and socks after dark, mosquito nets to sleep under.......prevention is a multi pronged strategy.

The story about the doctors not being able to give you the really good medicine once you are on the preventative stuff, is total nonsense. The treatment will be the same whether you take prophylaxis or not. The stories of the prophylaxis masking the disease and playing havoc with the testing is rubbish too.

No prevention is a 100% effective, that is true, but most should be in the high 90% range if used right. Consult a dedicated travel clinic about it and take it exactly as prescribed. Also, after you get home, for a month or longer, treat every flu like symptom with great suspicion and tell your doctor you have been to a malaria area. Miss-diagnosis and delayed treatment is the number one cause of serious complications.

Malaria is a VERY NASTY thing that you DON'T want, believe me. (I'm a frequent Africa traveller and believe in prevention rather than cure.)

Ps. I'm lucky that Larium works for me. The only side effect I ever noticed, was that my dreams are more vivid and colourful while I'm on it. (Imagine some Picasso paintings!)

I might have left it a bit late, looking for bike transport from PTA to the CTCT.

I see The Bike Migration does it at a rate of R1100.

I would prefer one of the options where the bike is not loaded in a box, where the front wheel is the only thing that is removed.

Any suggestions?

@DJR, I prefer Pure Savage's advice about the G&T's
Just kidding, I know malaria is to be taken seriously. I'll consult my doctor before going.

That wind sounds crazy! Let's hope for a beautiful day on the 12th of March.
I'm getting really frustrated with the winter here, temperatures are around freezing point. I'm even considering taking up spinning in a gym but I hate gyms. Need to get rid of some holiday festivities kilo's

The wind in the afternoon is worse though...

My man, going past Glencairn beach in last week, the wind was blowing that foam from the waves into the road, So i thought I will just belt it past that stretch till the incline starts at the station, Just as i stood and tried to put the power down, the wind literally blew me sideways(my 38mm carbon wheels didn't help at all) But i literally went sideways, I already had to ride further into the road because of all the sand on the side, LUCKILY the guy in the car behind me is a cyclist himself and had the patience to ride behind me, as he went past he told rolled his window down and said "Good Luck out here and be safe", next thing i hear a loud bang, i turn around and a guy on a TT bike got blown over, Got up and looked alright and went on his merry way.. The wind is completely insane... Mind you today there was minimal wind on my ride thankfully..

BOOM!!! Spot on, riding past those side streets is now being considered a type of suicide by all life insurance companies...

Dont you mean Ou Kaaps then black hill then right towards Simons Town and around?? If left towards Fish Hoek then straight at the circle, How will the cyclists coming from Fish Hoek side get accross the intersection and go right towards Chappies whilst the other cyclists are going straight from Ou Kaaps onto Black Hill??

Someone should tell the vine then, cause they don't know about it. The road is in the best condition that it has been in the past 7 years.

More likely a de tour due to fires if anything.

Traffic would not allow ou kaapse to be closed any more either.
