I predict an "extremely tactical race" for the ladies (at least until the first men catch up).

Tactical means slower... meaning fast men more likely to catch...

Yeah right. Like a 30 minute track stand?

What tactics can you play out in a 75 odd km race?

The men start at 6:15 some 34.2kms away.  The Ladies start at 6:30 34.2kms in front of the men.

At a 2:35 pace for the men (last year's winning time) meaning an average speed of 48 kph, the men will reach Glencairn at 6:58.

Do you really think the men will catch the Elite Women for 28 minutes in the next 74.8km?

With men at a 2:35 pace the Elite Women would have to ride at an average of slower than 33.7kph to be caught on the finishing straight. Not very likely, is it?

If I Remember correctly a Hubber once made a public bet that involved buying beers for all hubbers at the W2W (and promptly lost the bet). Not wanting to fall in the same trap I will wager nothing, but I will not be surprised at all if the above scenario does play out.

I remember that too. Jens the doper and the 1 hour record.

I took 4 cases of frosties to W2W and not one hubber collected. And I don't drink so they were useless to me too.

Team DJR fully assembled. All here, full house, all ready, well, maybe not quite ready. The 78 year old seems to be the best prepared this year. Retirement gives you time to train! The 16 and 18 year olds are in the middle of a test series, so only thinking maths and Afrikaans at the moment. They also have no idea where their timing chips are. I found one on the bike, where it has been since last year. Had a lovely dinner together, drank a glass, OK, a few glasses of wine together. Talked wind, temperature, tactics and decided that we don't really care what the weather does, we do our own thing and enjoy it anyway! I'll ride with DJR senior, who knows how many chances I still have to do that. The boys are looking for excuses to do the same, being a tad under-trained. One said he's worried his grandfather might drop him.......I think not, but that would make for a good story! Can't wait! Still working tomorrow. Will probably only manage to get to the Expo on Saturday.

That other Belgian cyclist called Eddy Merckx also used them....

he never knew any better.  why didn't he just use flat pedals like the legends before him?  (just using your train of thought)

never wore a helmet either.

For those who are interested - I am involved in the Hout Bay Cycling Club, an NPO for teenagers out of the local squatter camp to get involved in cycling.

After a year of hard work, two of the guys will be starting in & (second bunch) and one with me and Spidey in @ (third bunch)

We will be doing an hour's warm up ride from the circle at Princess and Main Roads in Hout Bay to Noordhoek and back starting at 7:30 on Saturday. Please join us if you can.

Based on current weather predictions, what rim depths are you lads going with?

38mm front and 50mm rear. Just enough to make me sweat some of the gusty downhill secions

Agreed. Highly unlikely they will be caught.

Out of interest, SA champs was 128.7km and Dalton won in 3h53m37s giving an average of 33km/h.

But of course, the Cycle Tour will be much shorter, cooler (SA champs only started at 10h15) and bigger bunch.

I am happy they have found a spot to completely do their own race. Only negative is the very late notification.
