My wife is now having to organise emergency staff to work tonight at Vergelegen as Hermanus can't handle the influx of Epic casualties, and some of the overflow has been diverted here.

Forget about the back markers, there were some broken looking bodies in Group C this morning. People hanging into pockets up Rotary already.

10am and it was already 32 degrees.

Don't think there was a single rider who felt cheated by this morning's decision. And it wasn't a coast this morning either. Short, but still pretty darn tough.

Yes. She says the Kidney Specialist is having a very busy time at the moment, and they have to do all the blood and urine tests.

Sjoe, hectic stuff, I hope all the riders make fast full recoveries.

Also seen messages of epic riders, even though they finished day 1, the one girl messaged that she still got booked in for kidney failure and another guy was put in a induced coma due to organ failure. No matter what the epic remains one of the hardest races.

Not if the medical staff keep pulling them off.

And that is why it is good that there is a seperation of responsibilities, with the medical staff not as such reporting to the organisers, but rather to their own standards of what constitute an unacceptable health risk. (but I could be incorrect on the relationship between the organisers and the health structures)

Was on top of Shaws Pass today - lots of riders were suffering. Medics eventually arrived and stationed themselves there.

They should have had another water point at Shaws, a lot of riders made the mistake of not taking extra hydration, hoping that one or two bottles would be ok!!!

I assume there a number of solo riders now, where one of the partners had a medical, and now have to decide if they doing the rest on their own.  Would be interesting how you prepare for that, do you then link with other riders, or just try and enjoy the rest of the race gaining experience?
