Do we really need long travel bikes in SA?

As for W2W...would I do that again...NOT A CHANCE...why would anyone pay R6000 to be stuck behind a bunch of fools who cant'ride a switchback without rear wheel lockup or getting off?

ha, ha! Brilliant! I was thinking maybe I'd like to give W2W a go as I don't race but everyone says the trails are amazing but still can't help thinking why would choose to ride single track with hundreds of the people. That sounds a total contradiction.

Sooooo....

I bought a nice HT frame to ride W2W with and the whole bike is nicely kitted with 140mm Sektor up front. Very sexy and capable bike...

2 Days before the event I decided 4kit and rode my Banshee Spitfire...All 14.5kg, 140mm rear and 160mm front of it...

That Spitty is heavy...but man oh man...it pedals like a dream (variable geometry as well).

Would I do it on a different bike next time?

Only if someone bought it for me and it  as STILL at least trail oriented..I see zero point in having a specific bike for marathon (aka k@k) and general riding...unless you don't like your money.

So I think the HT will be be being sold shortly.

what rear tyre are you running on that Spitty?

Was a Spaz Slaughter until about a week ago...

Put the Maxxis Minion DHR II i bought for the front to ride W2W on the back now and the Magical Mary is back on up front...

Although...Not really liking the Minion at the back. I may reverse the tread pattern and run it backward...Very little traction IMHO as soon as things get a little steep either way up or down...was not expecting that.

Ya....it's pretty krap :(

Some of the ST we had to ourselves, but only at the very end of the last day. SO that was fun to go (try) super fast. But it was still very flat and pedally.

May be worth doing it once...but I won't bother again

Avoid Cyclelab then ;)

Just kidding...not dissing them. There are however plenty shops not shoving XC bikes down our throats...

No but in all seriousness I should! Always walk out there feeling frustrated or dissapointed with something!

True - there are!

Do you ride a Vitus Escarpe?

I do not... I ride a Spez Stumpy 6Fattie. Has a Fox Float Factory 135mm and a Fox 34 27.5/29 with 150mm. Still playing with the set up - just added some volume spacers in the shock to reduce bottom out potential, but overall an awesome set up!

I hope these people are complaining about the black route being to techy for their XC bikes!  In which case they are idiots anyway.  No other route in Jonkers is to technical for a XC bike.  I've been riding a long stemmed marathon bike for the last 6 years and never had an issue.  Maybe people should spend some more time improving their skills on a MTB instead of complaining about trails that are to difficult.

Have a look at the XC course in Coetzenburg, that is what you should expect of an XC trail.  Most of the MTB races I did this year included almost no single track and the bits of single track included were not much to write home about.

STOP taking away our precious techy single track!!!!!

Nope, as far as I am aware it was the Canaries that lead to complaints. On my last ride at JH while making my way up I saw two riders on Canary no. 2. They were making heavy weather of it and got of and started walking after the first corner. A few minutes later some trail runners came blasting down the same track going much faster than the hiker bikers. That's sad.

And yes, i agree, you can ride all of that stuff on a marathon bike if you know your stuff. Actually riding it and having fun on it are arguably two different things. That said I have seen some real expert riders on XC bikes nailing the Coetzenberg XC track.

After all, the first MTB's we ever rode had more in common with modern marathon bikes than modern trail bikes. The thing is there is a happy ground between your out and out race bike and the 160mm enduro bike and that's actually what most people need in their lives.

So, I missed out on that Black Friday CRC hard tail... but does this class as a good substitute? ;)

Not a boast... honest. I've missed my 26'r five for many years and kicked my self for selling when I moved here. I'm in the UK for a bit and a friend offers me a bike to go for a ride with him. at the end we're drinking tea in the kitchen, thawing out from a 4c ride and eating hobnobs and that 2015 650b five MK1 is sitting in his kitchen.

So I ask 'what's up with that?' he's stripping to to sell as he's got a new model with the straight top tube and a new Mattoc pro 2 thing so the frame, the 140mm pike, hope headset, Sram x1 crank and BB are for sale with a Monarch Plus (not the CC in the image as that is going for £380 on it's own and I can't afford it) for about... well, sub R15k.

'am I interested?'...my answer was much like Myles response above.

and one more just for Hairy. ;)

The UK is fricking cold, muddy and a hell of a lot of fun, stupid, riding at the mo'! Oh, and radiators rock! Why no radiators in SA? Toasty!
