No surprise here at all, been trying to order a few of their offers for months and the website wouldnt let me order saying my address was wrong. So how many other sales like these they missed out on one would never know.

I used them once or twice and it was great, but speaking to the shop owners it always sounded like it was doomed.

Buy a voucher for a half price meal, shop get half its money but you occupy a table for the same as a full paying client.

Plus people tip 10% of the diacounted amount so the waiter gets shafted too.

Wife had a small business a year or two ago. Ran a deal on GroupOn. There really isn't much money to be made for the dealer at all. Suppose it depends on your margins before you sign up. You have to like half your price immediately plus pay GO their dues etc. You walk away with next to nothing. You only manage to "get your name out there" a bit. But making money... not so much. For stuff like beauty salons or businesses that offer services maybe, but if you sell a product, it isn't (wasn't) great.

Online shopping in South Africa... Freakin hard business...

running any business in SA right now is hard...but yes online is very cut throat, my last company offered training, for a normal 1 month contract of R750 to the client, Groupon wanted to pay no more than R150...

I think the benefit to businesses that utilized their platform was oversold by Groupon. People would Groupon, and then not return, as the discounted price would be seen as the maximum they would pay for any future patronage. Its more a behavioral reality than a case of Economics.

I actually agree, I used it for a breakfast and remember eating and thinking the portion size was small. Great for the price paid but not for the full price.

I then did a wheel balancing and alignment and have gone back 3 times to the same place, at full price.

They sold a lot of generic nonsense under electronics too.

I had mostly good dealings with them, river rafting in Parys, couple of meals, tickets to show and linen specials, even a bike service. I found their contact center a bit iffy though.
