Every night when I go to bed, I kneel next to my bed and wish upon a star that all the golfers would just stay on the golf course.

I think it might be working...

I'll just leave this out there. The recent Namaqua Quest 3 day stage race (sold out) had more female entrants than male entrants. Split was something like 55%/45%.

Isn't that the one with all the pretty flowers?

Its a good thing, they are becoming more aware of the true dangers of cycling on the roads.

As appose to getting mugged in the veld?

This is not the reason.

You have statistically a bigger chance of dying in a car than on a road bike.

Doesn't stop them ladies driving........

if it is .....

maybe we should join in a pray with patch

Imagine that... a MTB race where there is actually enough space to ride

Its also quite possible to ride an MTB or a road bike for a lot less than new bike prices. My wife rides a 2010 Zula with great components bought for R10k a few years back.

My road bike cost R3.5k. Its not peanuts but its also not expensive in the scheme of things. You don't need carbon or big wheels to enjoy your bike.

I have a 3 year old at home - my wife and i often take turns to ride or organize a babysitter to go on longer country rides. So, in my book, if numbers have declined, its not because of the reasons being offered here.

The one I do agree with however, is the safety aspect, depending where you live of course. Riding on the road seems to get increasingly dangerous year by year, and I don't think its limited to SA.

so I was interested to see how this compared with running...because running is going through a definite growth spurt. huge assumption here...but I think the number of female trail runners are increasing

what facts I do have is the number of competitors for comrades over the past 10 years...which also is quite interesting

2016 - 2962

2015 - 2505

2014 - 2441

2013 - 1963

2012 - 2336

2011 - 2190

2010 - 3135 (outlier)

2009 - 1748

2008 - 1414

2007 - 1767

2006 - 1608

Affordability in my opinion with regards to races (which is part of our motivation) led to my wife choosing not to ride. the fees are kinda getting out of hand.

I have been through a different challenge with ladies. We tried starting an all ladies Pure savage DC team vibe. Know enough ladies that are at a similar level to create a team, do you think any of them want to ride together? Not a chance, want to stick to their mixed teams.

Just look at how many all female DC teams there are :(

Driving a car is necessary to work and survive, cycling is just a hobby. And I suspect your stats might be misleading too.

safety or the lack thereof

the roads aren't safe apparently just read this forum for why

and the perception with mtb is that if you don't get ridden over by a macho weekend warrior you will get mugged

would you want your daughter to go off cycling ?

just saying :whistling:

I do agree with the above about road safety 100% but my perception of MTB differs slightly as if one only rides on managed trails not open country then one feels quite safe. The macho weekend warrior - never encountered anything but polite blokes who call out to let you know they are coming through but that is most likely cos I am on the easy trails, it may change when I graduate to the more difficult  trails and then I may get ridden over :)

I swear all the girls have started surfing! (At least the ones living at the coast...) Never seen that many girls surfing in 20 + years of chasing waves as I have seen in the past 18 months! It's really refreshing to have ladies mixing it up, more so when they back up their presence with skills in some of the more challenging spots my mates and I trek too!

You know you just triggered a run on second-hand surfboards?

And hence your point of view.....for me it is not a hobby.

It is a way of life.
