Ariane Luthi (I agree with her 100%)

Was it the right decision not to race yesterday? I believe, it was.

I didn't race the Ashburton National Marathon in Grabouw, because the prize money for the top women wasn't equal to the men's.

I engaged with organisers openly and at length offering many compromises. In the end I have to follow my heart. .

In some instances I agree with equal prize money. Marathon racing is one of those areas. If tennis players wants to earn equal, let the ladies play to 5 sets, golf, let them tee off from the pro tee. Here the ladies ride the same course, so they should get the same incentive.

In the Olympics the ladies medals are not smaller than the men's medals.

It does not look like a knee-jerk reaction, but rather a lengthy discussion, with no compromises from the organisers. Lets hope one of the sponsors sees the opportunity and step up to assist with equal prize money.

Maybe I am a bit dof but if only 25% of entrants are female, is there not a case to be made that there is still a huge amount of untapped market out there?

Do you care if the entry fee is paid by a man or a woman?

Does a race cater differently for men and woman? (The porta loo's are the same...)

Should mtb not be doing more to promote the sport amongst female riders to tap further into the market?

Fritz himself admitted there are not enough woman in the pro peloton. I think this can change. Start with a good incentive: money.

Money ain't going to get women onto cycles racing. Attendance figures for women in all cycle races, even with no prize money, is pretty dismal. Just go and look at the Spur Schools MTB. The number of girls of all ages in high school is the same as just the U/14 boys field.

Women just don't want to race on a cycle.

All these guys that think paying women less is ok are probably the same people that would have an issue if their wife or GF earned more than them...

Its just sad really. Wake up people!

It's so complicated.. you guys with kids know how much those kids have on their plates. For boys and girls, and you all know how much time goes into training, because unfortunately not only do kids have a lot on their plates, there is also that competitiveness that gets drilled into them from young..not so much by parents but schools.

Most kids want to do different sports so time is really an issue for them..

My eldest did some of the spur league last year, with all the sport clashing he ended up only doing 2 races..and the one was 45min after a hockey match. The kid was exhausted and guess what this year he said.. no xco, it's just too much to do.. train for hockey 3-4 days a week..try find time to cycle and still focus on academics, and not to mention all the traveling involved with all the sports, So he has cut right down and has made his decision.... the youngest is still planning on doing xco this year and I am hoping the school will be more organised this year with the cycling..it was a disaster last year.

I can only think a lot of these reasons cause low numbers in girls and boys..and as they get older the numbers get less, as more is put on their plates.

If you want to do cycling there is very little time left for other sport, and kids want to do so much they eventually just have to make a choice.

Yes they can just go for the fun of it, and that is what we encourage..but the thing is it doesn't matter how much fun you can have..you need the time to do it.

I think the ladies actually depend more on prize money than the men.. the men generally have really good sponsors. (Thinking out loud) How to fix this is a real challenge..you award more prize money they need more cash..

Suggestion is pay top 5 in both fields..why is position 6-10 in the men's race getting prize money..use that money to fund the purse for the ladies... what were the times for position 6-10 with the men compared to the top 5 ladies.?

Sauser didnt race the event for the prize money..I reckon he could care less.

100% agree with her,it's typical of how a lot of SA men and the world over think that woman are not as superior as they are and are not worthy of equal pay.As for Fritz Pienaar he is typical of the men who thinks woman are not worthy of it.#**** Would they want their daughters to get the same treatment?

I don't think anybody on this thread has mentioned actually paying women less. We are just debating the number of women doing competitive racing.

Hasn't got anything to do with the number women entered to be honest. If there are 25 women and 100 men the top 5 should get equal pay. Simple.

The salary comment is towards the comments from race organisers who don't see an issue with it.

You know, this world is really designed by some, for some. Mtb is still seen largely as a male sport but I cannot think of a reason it should stay that way.

When my wife and I started cycling she was scared of being on an mtb. Scared of falling, and scared of other men that make her feel like she does not belong.

Luckily I stood by her and kept on encouraging her to stand her ground. And now, she feels 100% comfortable in the sport.

I think the sollution to get more woman in the sport starts with men changing their attitiudes towards woman in sport.

You know what the funny thing is: in the ashburton series the 1st place male gets R26k and the woman R20k. So the organisers flip over R6k per event.

You want to tell me that the orgainisers cannot find that money elswhere? Hell man, go get First for woman insurance to sponsor the additional R6k per event and put a first for woman sticker in the number boards of all the lady participants. Done.

Or do what you need to do but do the right thing at least!

Equal prize money (and a fairer dispensation with regards to start groups) was the catalyst for the very strong field of women's racers at the Epic of late. I would be focussing on womens racing if I was interested in growing my event. The mens field is saturated already, so women and children must surely be next on the radar.
