Another aspect to mandatory helmets which has not been brought up is the amount of ppl that will now not ride due to the hassle of having to have a helmet...inactivity causes death..

how many lives does compulsory helmets actually cost....

hehe

your responses and arguments make me believe that you are the one with the ice cream cone on your forehead

"Look, he is not wearing a helmet. What a chop..." - usually said when the person riding the bike is doing cycling as a sport.

But when the person not wearing a helmet commutes to work for a living (and is probably less privileged), no one bats an eye lid or makes any comments about said cyclist.

Has wearing helmets become a purely a sport thing?

I know what the law says but I am wondering why cyclist that do this for a sport are always singled out in the helmet topic.

Let me start by saying I do always wear my helmet when riding in SA as I would not want to incur the wrath of the Hub.

However, I hail from Holland and there bikes tend to be used for commuting rather than sport and basically no-one is wearing helmets (and neither do I when I go back).

If you rent a bike, no helmet is supplied with it either.

So you would think that Holland has a much higher occurrence of serious damage to heads due to bike crashes (as opposed to visiting coffee shops). However, some universities have done some research and this is not the case. One can debate whether this is because the cycling infrastructure is much better and thus there are fewer accidents or commuting is at a slower pace or some other reason.

It is sort of an interesting fact that in a country hailed as a cycling mecca, the vast majority of cyclists do not wear a lid

Good point!

My postman doesn't wear a helmet, and I've yet to see him getting pulled over and judged by the Hub police. But maybe that says more about us as a nation than we're comfortable with...

There are some posts that are borderline "playing the man".

I know IceCreamMan personally, and he is neither a dwis, nor a mentally retarded person as the " ice cream on you forehead" post infers.

Look at the arguments being made and argue accordingly.

I see it this way, you can ride sans helmet and never need it, and it will be fine.

It takes one fall on the head to convince a person otherwise.

I for one would not have wanted to find out if my injuries would have been better or worse with or without helmet.

My cycling glasses almost destroying my eyeball is of greater concern to me.

THAT'S another thing!! I know of a person who got hit on the eyeball (no protection) by a bee at speed and bruised his retina...

you MUST wear eye protection when doing hazardous activities!! It's the LAW!!   (tongue firmly in cheek here)

As long as the arms are on the outside of the helmet straps........

We might as well go the whole hog in preventing idiots from harming themselves, so sun block should be LAW!!

Skin cancer is a killer and surely costs the economy millions!

I thought this debate was not about the usefulness of helmets(they are without a doubt useful) but rather if we must get our panties in a very tight(and uncomfortable) knot when we see other "stupid" people not wearing helmets?

Some people have way to much spare reserves of worry and anxiety, I have enough of my own problems to not need to contemplate why another guy chooses to not use a helmet, a decision that in all truth may have no negative effects on his life and if it does well I'd feel sorry for him.

You see how far ahead I'm jumping to get from seeing the guy with no helmet to him suffering brain trauma?

Chill okes, only one life - don't spend it engaging in paranoia, worry and being a control freak!!!

Those who wear helmets wear helmets. Those who don't don't.

The issue is with all the guys who think they have the right to challenge those that don't.

Like the dick who posts photos of guys riding in the yellow line on the M5. Or jumping a T-Juntion red.

Worry about yourself. Not others, What they do does not affect you. And I don't need some halfwit telling me I jumped a red light because it's red on his side but not mine.

And that gives you the right to lecture me if we pass each other riding?

Challenge/Lecture/Dicks/Halfwits. Not every exchange between two people needs to be so negative.

Not everything needs to be militant and aggressive. There is an area between radicals and apologists that exists, its where the majority of people live :)
