How safe is this route: Start In Fish Hoek, past Glencairn, over Smitswinkel, past Misty Cliffs all along Kommetjie Road over Chapmans Peak, with turnaround at Suikerbossie Restaurant.

As Hermes said. there is no shoulder on Chappies but it's PACKED with cyclists on the weekend and cars are pretty respectful in my experience. Riding past Masi is a bit dodge. Not from a crime perspective but glass on the road, kids running out, taxi perspective. I've heard of an incident where a guy with a hammer chased some cyclists close to ocean view but I think that was isolated.

Chappies has no shoulder going up from the Noordhoek side, but traffic volumes are low generally. Speed limit's 20, but no one obeys that. have fun

Cippo Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 There was 2 incidents near Soetwater, Oceanview area recently. That climb from Soetwater towards Oceanview is a cellphone deadspot.
T-Bob Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 It's a classic, safe and stunning. Just watch out for other riders on chappies descent than cars to be honest. Some people do some pretty crazy things and there are a lot of riders who are a bit more on the 'recreational' side of things so just be mindful of them. There was a couple of incidents on the quiet section near Cape Point early in the am a while back but nothing that has reoccured. Oh, and the hammer guy, that was weird.
carbon29er Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 If your proposed route is not safe to ride on a road bike I'm going to stop cycling and join Neil moaning about bloody cyclists having all the fun in the Peninsula. The route you have proposed includes cycling Mecca. You can add some variation to your route, rather than there and back as you have proposed, leave Fish Hoek towards Simon's Town, at Red Hill chuck a right and ride up our own Alps to the lookout, turn and go back down, continue on to Simon's Town, Smitswinkelbaai, Cape Point, then take Slangkop instead of right at Ocean View, continue on through Kommetjie and turn left towards Chapman's Peak and Ou Kaapse Weg. Take Chappies, continue on to Suikerbossie but go over through to Camps Bay past 12 Apostle's. Turn in Camps Bay (after a coffee?) and head back up Suikerbossie and Chappies. After Chappies go straight through the Kommetjie lights over Black Hill rather than turning right to Kommetjie and the route you have already done. After Black Hill turn left and head back to Fish Hoek along the coast. Slightly shorter but you see the best part of what we ride regularly. Edit: Spelling
