Top tip.

If the VAT is less that R300 DHL does not bother collecting it. So factor this is on smaller orders and look at the extra cost for DHL over paid postage knowing you will save R300 this end on VAT.

I placed my order with CRC on Tuesday morning & chose DHL for delivery.

DHL sent an SMS last night requesting payment, which I did this morning and the parcel arrived at 2:00 this afternoon.

That must be some kind if record!

wow that's faster than local deliveries i've had

I placed an order at bike24 in the beginning of the month and paid for dhl delivery, the parcel was sent by dhl on the 12th and I still haven't received it. I have tried to track it on the South african dhl site, but it does not show,it does show on the sapo tracking. Why would they take so long and should dhl not deliver it? Why does sapo have it. Any advice.

The german post is run by DHL and it is sent by that not DHL couriers. Have you gotten or packet yet?

No ideas really... I've had a fork take 8 weeks with their free delivery and a recent package with rims etc that has taken about 10 days on the non tracked, cheap, method.

Going to order through the post, its just a chainring so DHL is going to cost more than the product itself.

Just looking for A ballpark

Thanks.

Marginal gains... if you are in a hurry to get the part, use DHL and be done with it. Compare what you saved vs the local equivalent ( include shipping in this calculation) and decide if it's worth it.

If you are out to make a big saving, use std shipping, but be prepared to wait, and experience some frustration.

Put more and more stuff in your cart till you feel that the DHL Express option is worth the money.

Then have your stuff within a week.

My most recent experience:

  • Order placed with CRC on Friday, 19th of May. I qualified for free shipping and chose it as I wasn't in a hurry to receive the items. My order was split into two parcels.
  • First parcel sorted for export on Monday, 22nd of May (Parcelforce)
  • First parcel arrived in destination country (JHB) on Tuesday, 30th of May
  • First parcel was delivered (CPT) on Monday, 5th of June. Received a friendly call that morning to say the parcel was going to be delivered.
  • First parcel took 11 working days from order to delivery.
  • Second parcel sorted for export on Tuesday, 23rd of May (PostNL)
  • Second parcel arrived in destination country (JHB) on Wednesday, 31st of May
  • Second parcel was received at office of exchange (CPT) on Wednesday, 7th of June.
  • Still waiting for delivery of the second parcel...
  • Second parcel sorted for export on Tuesday, 23rd of May (PostNL)

What was the reason for splitting the order? Goods out of stock at time of ordering or is that CRC using the cheapest shipping option from their side?

This cannot be right. VAT is a statutory charge and needs to be paid and surely DHL is not going to pay it.....

I am not sure why they were split. The items were in stock when I placed the order, so maybe it is due to cost?

CRC ship from different warehouses hence the split shipment.

Just do not be in a position where you need to rely on speedy postage or couriering.

On their website (CRC), they describe it as: "Order before 13:00 and receive it in the UK two days later", "pay an extra 8 quid for next day delivery" etc

I have ordered when in London for shipment to my hotel, thinking it will arrive the next day or within 48 hours, paid the extra funds, and it was only dispatched from their warehouse 5 days later when I was safely back in Cape Town. To their credit, they took it back and refunded me.

on a side note, apart from VAT how much is the import duty on bikes parts?

Zero on parts.

Dhl does charge a fee to make sure your parts get through customs quic-quick. Think a figure of 17 to 20 % was mentioned somewhere before.

The last 2 orders I placed was cheaper ( although not my much) than the local equivalent, however it was the exact items I needed ( within 3 days of ordering) rhat was unavailable in South Africa.
