Garmin Varia. Expensive. Changed the way i ride. i now rely on it all the time.

One of the best investments i have made

Do you have the head unit as well? Keen to hear inputs from those that are pairing it with their 520's

I use my with my 810 and it's really effective. The newer 520 should be even better as a head unit.

I think cost is the limiting factor with that....brilliant product but too rich for my pocket.

I often ride with a friend who has one - paired my head unit to his - works surprisingly well.

Tried it with 3 different head units and the HUD and it worked great with all of them. Reviewed it over HERE if you're keen to have a look and read.

I am surprised by the number of cyclists that still ride without any lights. This is late afternoon/early evening and it blows my mind. I am not sure what these cyclists are thinking....guess it is the same as texting and driving....there is no thinking.

That and cyclists riding with a headlight that can and will blind the sun, but a half-dead firefly strapped to their seatpost all skew as a rear light.

I can say that, since I started using a proper, intelligient rear light, as well as normal flashing light on my backpack and on my helmet, I certainly feel that cars are not passing as close as they used to. However, if someone is texting or checking Facebook, it doesn't really matter what lights I have. The only difference here in the UK is that, if they kill me whilst they are texting, they are likely to do 10 years in jail.

At the moment, I've got 2 of these (rear, red)

And one of these

Together with one of these on my lid.http://www.rydercycling.co.za/images/stories/virtuemart/product/Ryder-edison-dual-usb.jpg

I have the middle one on my roadie, cable tied to teh seat stays just above teh rear tyre. I clip one of the top ones into my shorts, and the small one is on the back of my head. All on random flash mode, paired with an Extremelights 1,200 lumen front light and sometimes a helmet mounted 800 lumen light as well.

I'm considering another couple of lights for the roadie, cos I'm not sure about the daytime visibility of the ones I have.  This Blackburn really does look like the mutt's nuts! Also definitely getting a mirror for the roadie.

Exactly this!

Narrow the risks and use lights front and back.  It is not difficult.

C'mon guys, lets TRY and be safe out there.

Using lights day and night is a start.

Particularly this.

Never ceases to amaze me. I take my kids to school over Suikerbossie well before 7. I cannot tell you how many riders I see with no lights.

And then the complete idiot, yes Patch idiot is the right description, with a "…nine hundred and thirty…nine…nine hundred and thirty nine million, three thousand and sixty thousand…close to a billion" lumen front light.

And no rear light.

But he's on the other side of the road where his biggest danger comes from the motor vehicles approaching him from behind.

Not those coming from the opposite direction about 12 metres away on the other side of the road.

The mind boggles at the thinking.  Or maybe it doesn't think.
